Want to upgrade my i5 4460.

I want something with 6 cores that is hyper threaded

I was thinking getting a Xeon around the 3rd to 5th generation (possible earlier)

BUT with zen right around the corner I feel getting a cpu upgrade would be pointless and stupid

You would be fine with an E3-1231 v3 which doesn't require a new motherboard

How is that limiting you? I have it and did not had anybissues at 1080p unless you stream 4k games

Then the 1231 v3 or similar Haswell Xeon for LGA 1150 is your only real upgrade path. It's got 4 cores, hyperthreading (Xeons below 1230 don't have HT)

Or if he has a z97/z87 chipset he can buy 4790k and oc the shit out of it
