Burning through alligator clips

Jack the Stripper

Just toasted another set. 12V vehicle air tire pump using Dewalt battery from drill. Metal parts touched and burning plastic.

Are there any other design of these alligator clip cables that are better or does everyone just tape them up.

Those are good for only low amp use, for running motors and other high draw stuff you need something a little more beefy.

I use these clips with 12-14 gauge wire,

Oh I got some grrrrreat alligator clips, like break skin strong. I think I need longer, wider plastic insulated flappy things on the ends.

They make versions like theses for test leads which are fully insulated however they are a bit more bulky.

I fried 15 sets before I realized they're only rated for about 1 amp

Its not the amp rating of the wire or clips, its the alligator clips touching and frying the wire.

Happened twice now. I am lucky 50% of the time. The first time it fucked up a $200 piece of equipment that now needs a new MOSFET, and they all need to be matched. I will probably end up selling that item and losing $40. Then I will buy a better Sinewave unit instead of a square wave unit. Plus a MOSFET unit that can handle more amps. Right now the blown MOSFET unit can only handle 60A, but I want more power so I have been looking at 100A units.

What are your clips touching? If your wires are frying, way too much current is going through.. You're doing a short circuit or your wires aren't design to handle this current.

So why are you being an idiot with these? Jeeze, at the very least, grab some micca insulation, and just place it between the alligator clips if their going to be that close together.
