So I had this idea of building a pc thats sole purpose is to run emulators think neo geo, snes, genesis etc and all the way to possibly dolphin emulator I know a raspberry pi cant do that. But wondered whats the cheapest yet fairly most reliable itx build that can do the job and look to you guys to get a better result than what I have here is what i have so far:https://pcpartpicker.com/list/b864Ps

Is it possible to get this under 250$? or make it better price to performance? Thanks

I only know SNES emulators, and I'd say an 1050 is an EXTREME overkill for that.

The motherboard supports onboard video, so get a CPU that can be used as an APU. (no GPU needed...)

I run emulators on my dated system, and before that, I used a 10+ year old pc. Worked fine.

Which APU would you go with capable of perhaps running dolphin emulator as well if possible? and thanks for your answer it was insightful

Dolphin makes use of two processors if present!

  • Windows XP or higher, or Linux, or MacOSX Intel.
  • Fast CPU with SSE2.
  • GPU with Pixel Shader 2.0 or greater. Not all integrated graphics chips work.

If it can run under windows XP, it's highly likely a semi new APU would work for you. I'll go and play outside today, but if you would send me a reminder, I might test Dolphin on my current PC tomorrow.  It uses an older AMD APU, which I got used for cheap. I think it will be just fine for dolphin.

if you dont want to go beyond PSX (which is about the edge of a pi's capabilities), you can get one of these asrock boards:

i've been toying aroud with one of them (the mATX one to be more exact tho) and they're quite capable little things, but that "capability" falls short right around nintendo DS emulation, which runs at like.. 50-70 ish % speed.

i should just have a quick try at how dolphin some day, but i dont have big expectations of that seeing even a beefy desktop sometimes has issues with doplhin still :P
