Hello all,

I am upgrading my GPU soon and I have some mixed feelings about my power supply and if it will hold up.

I'll be upgrading to either a 1060 or a AMD soon. (Haven't decided)

But here are my current system specs:

CPU: Intel Xeon e3-1231-v3

CPU Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212 Evo

RAM: 8GB of Crucial Ballistix Sport DDR3

MOBO: Asus H81M-D PLUS Mirco ATX

GPU: EVGA 950 GTX GeForce SC 2GB

PSU: EVGA 430W 80+ Bronze

I suspect that I will need to upgrade that, but I wanted to get a second opinion

If you do upgrade your power supply, I recommend EVGA. Probably get a 650W.

I agree 650W would be a worthwhile upgrade.  I generally find 750W to be the sweet spot since it gives more headroom for future expansion within the price.  PSUs don't fluctuate much in price as time goes by.  As for brands there are only a few manufacturers and the brands we see predominantly like EVGA, Corsair, etc are not the actual manufacturers.  Basically they are manufactured by companies like Seasonic, Superflower, Delta Electronics, etc but put their own tweaks like different fans, fancy packaging, etc.  Basically staying with the main manufacturers like EVGA, Corsair, Seasonic is a good idea.  Check out http://www.jonnyguru.com/ for good PSU reviews.

I am getting an 850W P2 from EVGA.

That's a nice PSU.  I was deciding between the EVGA 1000P2 and the Corsair HX1000i and ended up going with the Corsair.  I went 1000W because it was the only 80 Plus Platinums available at the time.  I probably should have just gone 750W or 850W 80 Plus Gold instead. #BuyersRemorse

550w would still be fine for a single 1080

There is no need for more

Don't judge PSU by brand, judge them by quality

430w will be fine but I suggest getting a higher quality unit like a Seasonic S12II or Corsair CXM as they often really cheap and should do its job too

EVGA G2, Gq is also good but might be pricier

Check PSU TIER LIST. Tier 1-3 is good

Well, obviously. Never get such a low wattage, they are bound to be awful.

The wattage is fine for 99% of rigs nowadays (450W can run an i7 and 1080), the unit itself is just awful though. Also, other 450W units are actually fine, such as the CX450M or Corsair SF450.

So Seasonic S12II 430Bad is bad?

I do judge them by quality, and EVGA has always been quality for me.

EVGA doesn't make any of their units so that isn't how that works. The 430W unit that OP has happens to be pretty mediocre.

42 minutes ago, Emma Nieuwenhuis said:

Yes, it is. Even if it works fine, don't pay more than 30 dollars for it. Just get a 500W for like 40.

What.....? Seasonic is literally the best brand to make PSUs in existence. The S12 is much better than the EVGA 430W....

Nope, a good choice for a 1060 actually.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.

OK? But yeah, the Seasonic S12 430W or CX450M would suit your 1060 and Xeon just fine.

Yer no.

Wattage is irreverent to quality, same with efficiency.

My Antec EA380 is a beast of a PSU, 10 years old and still going strong because it is a well built, Seasonic made PSU.

Would you prefer this EVGA 750W PSU or a Corsair Vengeance 400W? (Hint, there is only one legitimate answer and it is not the EVGA)

Really wattage is an AMD vs Intel thing from my experience. I got a really nice 450 watt power supply and I was running an A8-7600, well as soon as I went and got a R7 370 4GB GPU I had to get a 750 watt PSU or my system would not post. Unfortunately that 750 watt PSU failed, I shipped my whole PC to the company that made the PSU and they replaced the shorted out parts (in this case just my APU) and they gave a fully modular 80+ bronze PSU to replace the other one. Unless your water cooling your whole system or getting a case that has really good cable management options, get a modular PSU, there better quality usually and they allow for amazing cable management..

You can use PCPartPicker to help with sizing your power supply requirements.  I've put your parts into the build and added some other components like HDD and SSD and it seems it's sufficient at 279W.

do you think I will be okay for the time being when I do upgrade my gpu until i can upgrade my power supply?

You should be fine with upgrading your GPU now.  Worst case you your PC will just shutdown if it lacks power.  You should upgrade your PSU for your next upgrade though.
