Hey all,

I'm upgrading my mom's computer soon to some Z97 stuff from an old Intel dual core chip and board from close to 9 years ago.

Can I just plug all the new hardware in with the same storage and then reverify the windows key and be good to go?

(And then of course install the appropriate chipset + graphics drivers etc.)

Thanks!

-Matt

Technically OEM keys are 1 per computer so you should buy a new key however if it's running Windows 10 build 1607 then the key is tied to your microsoft account and can be reactivated across hardware swaps.

Yah, the last build of Windows 10 changed it so it's tied to your account now which is rather nice.

If it's not tied onto your microsoft account, then it is "tied" with your hardware, atleast i've heard that from reliable sources...

This is the disk I have.

Will it work for hardware swap then?

it was windows 8 that was special https://www.microsoft.com/OEM/en/licensing/sblicensing/Pages/windows-licensing-for-personal-use.aspx

currently windows 10 can be linked to your MS account so that you do not have to enter a product key but OEM is still tied to the motherboard, the product key is now essentially a number derived from hardware serial numbers and registered on MS activation servers

you have a academic media. You can do whatever you want with it. I got my academic win 7 key black listed by authenticating 3 virtual machines on one day in the space of about 3 hours.

your cd says it doesnt come with a key which means you need the key from your COA sticker. Any version & edition of windows should be able to be used on academic installation media
