do you need cache for a nas?

in this video linus made, 

he uses an ssd for the cache of the nas. if i dont have an ssd, what do i do? do i just replace it with a USB or do i really need one?

The SSD is used as a dedicated cache drive for faster transfers but you don't need one.

Cache won't help in a gig network, id say don't get it.

 

Also depends on the os and storage conifg, on wether you can even use one. Whats your setup?
