I JUST ACCIDENTALLY TOUCHED THE GOLD CONTACTS ON MY CPU

I WAS TAKING IT OUT OF THE PLASTIC CONTAINER AND MY FINGER SLIPPED! IS IT OK? IM SCARED!

If it is Intel then you're golden!

If it is AMD, make sure that no pins were bent and you are 100% fine

Why should you be? It's just a contact. Wipe it carefully with some alcohol and forget about it.

 

Unless it's an AMD chip. Then don't touch it.

Don't worry too much OP, Ive built 3 pcs now and still have little freakouts, I sweat bullets installing heatsinks to this day.

You'll be fine. It's best not to do it, but the CPU is not instantly non-functional because you did that. However, if you have some isopropyl alcohol around, I would clean off the gold contact to ensure your skin oils aren't on there, and performance won't be impacted.

Though this is true, you prolly shouldn't tell this to someone with no experience, as it is also somewhat easy to screw up. By touching the CPU socket, running a CPU without heatsync, putting the thermal paste in the wrong place or way too much of it, trying to insert the RAM the wrong way around, etc.

Depending on the CPU, it may already come with one. But you can get one from Amazon, Newegg, etc.

i dropped my cpu on the ground then it flew across the room and its still working till this day!

yo new issue, i can't find 99% isopropal alcohol, only 91, is that ok or does it need to be 99?
