I've been using the same vga cable for about 5 years and never even noticed I wasn't running in 1080p till CS:GO didn't let me select it. I've done some research on the LTT forums and on google so I know that vga supports 1080p. Yes my TV does support 1080p as well because when I plug my PS3 in via hdmi it runs in 1080p. I've already tried getting a new cable, but I got the same issue. While doing my research I came across a site where someone said his issues was caused by cables not utilizing all 15 pins. Should I just get another cable and make sure it works at the store before I take it home or should I just some kind of vga to hdmi adapter from Newegg or Amazon? Here is the website I found talking about some of the pins not working http://forums.macrumors.com/threads/new-vga-cable-wont-do-1920x1080.1016490/. I also took screenshots of my max resolution. https://gyazo.com/95da5367d460ae2926f1d6d87499ac7f   https://gyazo.com/91ab653df9c497d43ef4e1aff5deedc3

Ask the store guy to lend it to you so you can test it. Leave your money there but make sure he understands that you want to take it back if it doesn't work.

You only have VGA as option to connect to?

I figure this is just someone blindly guessing.  Only five of the pins in a 15min D-Sub connector carries meaningful image information, Red, Green, Blue, Horizontal Sync, and Vertical sync on five pins, five more pins are for ground.  The remaining 5 pins just carry the EDID information or DDC data, which are technically entirely optional.

If you 'didn't use enough pins' you'd basically have entire color channels or sync signals missing.  You wouldn't have 'resolution problems' from that.

If I were to guess, your display's VGA port doesn't report 1920x1080 support on it's EDID so the OS doesn't offer the option.  Y

VGA, blast from past much. Any particular reason for still using it? Guessing TV only supports VGA?

It's probably a EDID issue.

He could still try a different cable just to make sure, but yeah possible. Just remembered in the past we saw different resolutions trough different cables for 1080p xD, like now with 4k/5K.

*Looks at monitor that can only take VGA, cries*

I at least have my TV connected to the laptop when I want to watch Youtube. The monitor is also connected, but I use it when i work on documents or so (or when my dad hogs the TVxD).

No but seriously, #OldPCStandardsLikeVGAAndSATA3StillUsedTodayMasterRace ...

VGA cable handles analog signal, so the quality of the cable determines the possible resolution that can pass it. But in this case the "other end" is a TV, so I think there is your issue. I haven`t seen a 1080p TV that can show content on "PC" port (VGA) with full resolution. It`s mostly 720p or even lower.

I would use DVI -> HDMI converter (costs nothing) and use HDMI port on TV.
