It might a little at 1080p, but you should only be buying a 1080 for 1440p or above, so no.

yes, slightly at 1080p. It should still run very well, just if you plan to hit 144fps for 144hz monitors. It will be fine for 1440p and above, you shouldn't be buying it for 1080p anyway.

that makes no sense though cause 1440 is more restrictive and requires more HP than 1080p...

That gpu is way more powerful than i5.

At 1080p the card can push over 150 frames in many games and CPU has to process all of that data. That puts a lot of stress on it. On higher resolutions GPUs dont produce that many frames so CPU deals with less data.

Tldr; GPUs work harder at higher res providing CPU with less data = less stress on CPU.

This is why I was surprised when people said FX8350 runs games decently at 4K compared to 1080p when it bottlenecks a lot.

Very basic explanation but I hope you get the point.

get an i7-6700K and a GTX 1070 and call it a day you'll have a much better system.

My old 4790k @ 4.7ghz sits at 90-95% usage in bf1 on ultra. 1440@144hz and a 1080sc.

Sure as hell ain't getting 144 frames but it does it's best. See high 130's.

Gonna see how it handles bf4 and hardline this weekend. Only games I really play though.

Main RIg Corsair Air 540, I7 9900k, ASUS ROG Maximus XI Hero, G.Skill Ripjaws 3600 32GB, 3090FE, EVGA 1000G5, Acer Nitro XZ3 2560 x 1440@240hz

i7 6700k + GTX 1080

i5 6600k + GTX 1070

i7 6700k + GTX 1070

i5 6600k + GTX 1060

Pick one of the above option.

In my opinion, GTX 1080 should be paired only with the best tier CPU. And right now the best gaming CPU is i7 6700k.

Not to sound offensive, but that's an ignorant way of looking at it.

but if you pair i5 6600k and GTX 1080, CPU will be bottlenecking you.

Rarely will the i5 drop framerate enough to consider it a 'bottleneck' with a 1080 and even while the issue is more pronounced with the Titan X (pascal), it's still marginal in games that are heavily CPU bound.

People tend to be more concerned with the frames dropping for some reason as opposed to the real issue.

Even with my cpu pegged at 100% frames nor clock speed moved. It was laggy. Simple as that. Also when frame time goes from 4-5 to 12-14 that's the real issue. I don't car if I get 60 frames as long ask the time is low and no lag.

This whole conversation is completely useless without knowing what games you're wanting to run.  I have 2x 1080s and a 5930k @ 4.3GHz and I can't get more than 40FPS in certain places in World of Warcraft because of how badly it is optimized for multiple cores on the CPU.  Every game is going to act differently, so tell us what games you're focused on and that will allow for an actual answer to be given.

This^^^^

If you intend on gaming with that PC of your OP you'll want the best experience,  right? A CPU bouncing of the Rev limiter makes for a bumpy, stuttering ride. People get lost in fps, frame times and minimum fps matter way more.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

when you build a new system you do not focus on ''what games you want to play'' because you don't know what you'll want to play in the future, what games you might get bored with, what new games you might get interest in etc...that's a stupid way of thinking.

What you want to do is build something that will perform great overall in every scenario...that's why you avoid for example an AMD FX CPU because while it has decent multi-threaded performance it's single core performance is abysmal and some games will punish you hard for that...that's why you pick 16GB of RAM...most games can run off of 8GB but some will punish you for that, same for memory clockspeed some games will react well with faster memory...that's why you avoid a GPU with only 3GB of VRAM cause some games will punish you for that, for the same reason you try to avoid a CPU that is ''barely ok for now'' with only 4 threads and 6mb of L3 cache because again some games will punish you for that...

So even if the game you plan to play FOR NOW only require 2 GB of VRAM, 8GB of RAM, 4 CPU thread and 1333mhz RAM...this might NO LONGER be the case next holidays when you'll want to play the new game that has just come out and your friends are playing...see what i mean? man.

A good gaming PC is something balanced where you want to attack every front possible within your budget constraints...and IMHO in this right very moment a PC with a GTX 1070 and an i7-6700K will perform better and more consistently and will age better than one with 50% less CPU threads and L3 cache and a 20% faster GPU...in the grand scheme of things unless you do 4K gaming or shit like that...
