Media server

Hi there , i have some media that i would like to host on my server for clients to connect and stream my media from their phones , tablets etc ,,, the thing is that i don't know what i need to buy . 

1- wich server is better for media streaming 

2- wich OS is the best for this 

 

Note : i want to create something like netflix , but with a different content , if you guys can help me with some advice i ll really appreciate it .

i'll state the obvious and say kodi or plex. I prefer plex honestly. But you'd need a plex pass for mobile and I think the perks that come with the service is 100% worth it.

Thanks for your answer and yes for me plex is the best i use it for my movies at home , but i have some friends that are working on create a new interface or server software for our project we are gonna create something like plex , but what i need is the best server physically server for media streaming services and what os would be the best .

How much do you want to spend. Something like a r730 would be great, but probalby way out of budget. 

 

For in budget, id look at something like a used r710. Still has more than enough cpu for media streaming, and about 100-200 used these days. 

 

For os, Id go with something like centos. Stable, supported. I see no reason to run windows here, and something like freebsd won't really help you.

if people will be streaming stuff to their phones i guess they will not be on wifi at all times?

you might want to consider encoding hardware to transcode down to lower bitrates or resolutions and save bandwidth.

 

how much upload will this server have available?
