Hey guys,

I'm looking to upgrade my PC for the holidays and I want to get an i7 6700k (and accompanying motherboard). I have a haswell i5 right now and ddr3 memory. I see that some z170/h170 boards support ddr3 so i would like to use my old memory, but will this be compatible?

Some places online say its not ok, some places say it will be fine. Which is true?

Please dont say "intel says its bad", i already know that. But why would motherboard company make ddr3 board if it breaks the IMC?

Only ddr3l would work. Your Ares ram at 1.5v wouldn't without undervolting which might not be reliable.

Why move to Skylake if you want to stick to ddr3? Getting a 4790k would be cheaper and perform very similarly.

Motherboards can have silly features.

I assumed that Skylake would give me a better upgrade path in terms of my storage options.

Edit: bad news, cpu is already being shipped. What do i do? If I undervolt my ram it should be fine, yeah?

Get your cpu delivered and then refund it.

Like overclocking, no guarantees.

Unless you need the storage speed for something in particular, I don't see much benefit in going with Skylake for storage.
