Looking to upgrade from 60fps to 1440p and over 60fps

afklinus

Current build I was planning on just upgrading my monitor and gpu. To a dell 24 inch monitor and a evga gtx 1070. However a user on reddit mentioned that my cpu would cause significant bottlenecks on my gpu citing these benchmarks . I live in the US and i was hoping to upgrade for around 1000. If this will cause a bottleneck what cpu and motherboard should I upgrade to? I was looking at some of the posts in reply to the christmas 2016 build guide and the i5-6600k seemed pretty good but is it necessary to upgrade beyond 4 cores yet or is 4 cores going to last for quite some time still? Rig is mostly for gaming and internet use.

Depends on games.

Generaly above 100Hz go for i7.

For under 100Hz the i5 will be fine.

(Paired with appropriate GPU).

That said you can still get over 200FPS easily in games like LoL, CS:GO...with a potato.

While it is a great point ive never played LoL or Cs:Go not that I have anything against those games per say. I usually play fallout and the newer "AAA" titles that release each year.

Is the i7-6800k the best one to get in this scenario? I realize at least it seems like 4 cores is still plenty but its only like 30 some dollars USD to get an extra two cores.

So what I was told about my cpu bottlenecking is true then? and the only way to benefit from 100hz is to go intel?

Maybe..... Thought, I'd hold off to see the 3rd party benchmarks for Ryzen personally.

You dont need to upgrade your CPU if you play games that dont require it but for most new games you will definitely see difference especialy when playing above 60Hz as your current CPU is barely enough for even that 60Hz right now.

Yes, right now Intel is the only option and AMD Zen early next year may be the option too but we dont know yet for sure.

I was kind of hoping to upgrade early spring. Wont it be 2nd or 3rd quarter before ryzen or zen releases?

but take into consideration the motherboard too, they're a bit more expensive than z170

Well dam it all to hell. Looks like ill have to "settle" for just upgrading the cpu, mobo, and ram. I'm glad I posted about this. I think im used to getting downvoted to hell on other sites. Since there wont be enough for a gpu maybe ill finally upgrade to an SSD as well

Yeah I need to do more research into it and find out if im going to get any benefit from a 6 core processor. With that said if i cant get the new monitor as well then the 1070 might as well wait until I can get both. I might put that money into a decent sized SSD and "suffer" through another year of my 7970.

Yeah but its 2 cores cooler than 4 cores and I have 8 cores now. I will probably look more into the i7-6700k. Thankful you have been very helpful today.

what? 2 cores cooler than 4 cores? so you want a 6800k because its "cooler" a 6700k actually perform better in single threaded performance. the 6800k will only do better in video editing, which you are not doing.

yeah, you have 8 cores now, but those are 8 weak cores. so its technically a quad core which still is weaker.

They say Q1.... But I agree that Q2 / Q3 is more realistic given the delays we've already seen
