is having a stock heatsink with a intel core i7 4970k for a long time a bad idea? and suggestions for a small cooler?

If it is at stock clocks I don't see an issue, my old i5 3300k is on a Intel Cooler, and never had an issue in years of gaming.

PC - NZXT H510 Elite, Ryzen 5600, 16GB DDR3200 2x8GB, EVGA 3070 FTW3 Ultra, Asus VG278HQ 165hz,

Mac - 1.4ghz i5, 4GB DDR3 1600mhz, Intel HD 5000.  x2

Endlessly wishing for a BBQ in space.

As long as you're not overclocking, a stock cooler is more then enough.

Just give a dusting every now and then. Only need a new cooler or change thermal paste if your cpu temps are high or it's load.

Yup just dust it out, again my 3300k has been in daily use for going on three years now, apart from dusting it out once a month, done zero too it!

Just be careful when using a vacuum or compressed air, the high-speed air can cause static build up.

Are your temps issue? That would be only reason to change paste.

Stock is fine. They wouldn't include it if it wasn't. Only thing is that if you are running heave tasks for long periods, temps can and will get pretty high. For those tasks its good if you have $50 to land on aftermarket cooler. Best cheap coolers are 212 Evo, Pure Rock, H7 and M9i.
