GPU. Get a 1070 or wait for the 1080Ti if you have the money.

Plus 8GB more of ram wouldn't hurt since those new DX12 games are prone to mem leaks.

I not home but can post it later how much better is ddr4 to ddr3

4790K doesn't support DDR4, stick with DDR3, 16GB is the sweet spot. Theres really no point in swapping that CPU for anything at the moment as the cost would massively outweigh the performance gained.

Also what resolution? if 1080P a 1080 gtx would be a massive waste. I would also consider waiting for the VEGA launch

Your CPU is already a quad core Hyperthreaded i7. Good enough for gaming and even some harder tasks. The rest of your system is good. I would suggest getting a GTX 1070, and if your budget allows its, a 1080.

MSI GE72 Apache Pro-242 - (5700HQ : 970M : 16gb RAM : 17.3" : Win10 : 1TB HDD : Razer Anansi : Some mouse) - hooked up to a 34UM58-P (WFHD) in dual screen

iPad Air 2 (for school)

iPhone 6

Xbox One Forza 6 Limited Edition Blue

It isn't really batter for most things. Faster RAM only makes a difference when using onboard graphics or in some super specific applications which you would not be using.

Also, your board will sup[port one or the other, so going with ddr4 requires a cpu+mobo spaw, so totally not worth it.

When in doubt, re-format.

The 1080 was my plan looking at the MSI one around 700 something

If you want to do a big expensive desk build with full watercooling I would build an entirely new system but if you simply want to upgrade the one you have then I would get a 1080Ti in January or February when it launches. The 4790k you have can handle the newer cards in SLi and is just barely behind a 6700k, your GPU on the other hand is pretty dated and you will gain a lot by swapping in a new top tier GPU. Vega or 1080Ti in a few months imo.

What would fps look like at 4K or should I stick with a 144hz 1080p

144hz 1080p is arguably better for gaming cause of the frame rate. Personally, you should consider 1440p 144hz.

34" curved widescreens are amazing. I would personally wait for 4k 100hz or 1440p 144hz curved widescreens to pop up on the market, right now they are limited to 100hz but they've been out awhile and I'm sure we will be seeing some new ones pop up next year. Maybe we have another year or two to wait but we should have some really nice screen tech hitting the market in the near future. I play 1080 144hz surround until then when I will replace my center monitor with something along those lines.

Negligible performance gain in real-life usage.

Get a better graphics card. It doesn't get much better than a 4790k for gaming.

Look at benchmarks. 4K and 1080p are worlds apart.

4K will look better and give you more real estate to work with. 144hz is better for competitive gaming but that's about it.
