Bigger GPU won't boot... ?

Mhm, that is my guess, Since it works with the old GPUs maybe it's the power draw over PCI. Reminds me of the RX480 but that's just a wild guess. :P
The whole system is over 7 years old I think, so maybe it's time for something new anyway. He (my friend, whose computer that is)  was thinking about that in fall already but his wife's pc was more serious as it didn't run the new Warcraft expansion back then.

Would be nice to know exactly, however. :) My curiosity has awakened.

Edit: Oh, and it is this board: https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M3NHT_DeluxeHDMI/

So, dear LTT Forum, here's my I think unusual problem.

A friend wanted to upgrade his GPU and bought a used one (working, tested by me just now).

A GTX 770.

He wanted to install it on a M3N-HT Deluxe from Asus running with a Phenom X2 and a 500Watt PSU.

Problem ist, the PC doesn't boot, it loops. Bios Bootscreen appears, post beep as normal, black screen and repeat.

I treid a different PSU, no change. I tried different GPU, here's the funny part: A GTX 210 (for testing purposes) works flawless.
Another GTX 770 (my personal old gpu, also working) does not. Same Problem. His old GPU, GTX 640 works as well.

I disconnected any drives so only MB, and GPU. Not plugging in GPU power cables warrants the error do power down and connect these. But once connected: bootloop.

Any ideas?

Much appreciated.

What are the exact models of the 2 PSUs used?

Looking at my signature are we now? Well too bad there's nothing here...

Try a different motherboard if you can. My first instinct would be to think that's it's the PSU, since the lower powered cards are working, but you already tried a different one. So I'm not quite sure.

Lenovo Ideapad 720s 14 inch ------ One day I'll have a desktop again...

Could be a bad power supply not being able to actually provide enough power.

Try CMOS reset.

 •E5-2670 @2.7GHz • Intel DX79SI • EVGA 970 SSC• GSkill Sniper 8Gb ddr3 • Corsair Spec 02 • Corsair RM750 • HyperX 120Gb SSD • Hitachi 2Tb HDD •

That was my first guess as well. :)
Too much power draw so safety turn off. Did CMOS reset, no change.

PSUs are Enermaxx 530Watt Hamburg
and a 500W Nitro X from Coba (Intertech).

Hmmmmm...2 not great PSUs but they should still be fine to let the computer boot...

Alright, let's just say it's not a PSU issue for now.

Can you maybe see if anything is shorting?

I had a similar thing with a friends PC. I never even got anything to show on the screen.
Do you know exactly what kind of connector the mobo has? In my case it clearly wasn't PCIe 3 even though it was  some kind of 16xPCIe slot and the card fit in snuggly. It just wouldn't boot. Check that but I am 90% sure you have the same problem judging by your description which would be bad news. He would have to get a new mobo if I am correct.

Probably PCIe 1, pretty old.
My guess atm is the the old PCIe draws too much power.

What I found, if I hit del to enter bios, it freezen on loading setup screen.
Other GPUs load bios fine.

No shorting as far as i can tell. A short flickering in my main pc screen on turning on the power outlet (not the pc itself, though.)

Hmmmm...could you possibly try his PSU in your system with your PSU?

Try PSU with my PSU? :D
I replaced the enermaxx PSU because the fan was acting up (loud noise after a few minutes, but still spinning so I'm pretty confident that at least my PSU works fine.

Same goes for the GPU, I upgraded from my old GTX 770 when still working fine. Problem is only in this computer.
I really need to get a testing station set up. ^^
