Do I need a DAC for a pair of hd 598 special editions

Do I need an external dac to run a pair of hd 598 or is my onboard audio good enough?

You mean an amp? No, it's not necessary.

from my personal experience I would get one if you plan on audio monitoring but if not its good enough

Doubtful that you need one..

Once you get your headphones and you feel like they're too quiet then you can try investing in an amp, but if your overall satisfied then well.. That speaks for it self

Your onboard should be able to run them.  It would help to know what motherboard you have.  I have an Asus crosshair v and it runs my 598's no problem.
