How to tell if my packet loss and high ping is a result of my router or a poor ethernet cable?

a2242364

So when I connect my pc directly to my modem via an ethernet cable, I get no lag and ping spikes. However, when I connect through my router, my ping would skyrocket and would occasionally get packet loss as high as 18%. My router is DLink DIR 615. Is it because this router is extremely outdated, or because my ethernet cable is broken?

How are you connecting through your router? Wifi?

And how does the modem connects to the router?

Reboot your router if you haven't already. Swap ports on the back of the router/switch (grey cable). If you still see packet loss, replace each cable (grey and yellow) one at a time and test for packet loss each time.
