GPUs are using for rendering graphical things like games or a 3D model. That doesn't mean they can only do this. As GPUs are becoming more and more useful in non gaming orientated tasks.

A dedicated GPU lets you play graphically intensive games for example. But...

It is NOT necessary in this day an age where most CPUs also have an "integrated GPU" on the chip itself. This "iGPU" is not as powerful as a dedicated GPU, but should still be good enough to watch movies, play basic games, browse the web and what not.

 

So unless you're into gaming, video making or whatever else, you don't need a dedicated GPU.
