Why do we care what the guy said about the pronunciation of his file type, he's not a linguist. GIF is an acronym that stands for "Graphics Interchange Format."

 

And how many other inventors had their names for their inventions stick? How many of those inventions go by the "correct" pronunciation?

 

But let's follow that the inventor has final say on the name of their invention.

If you pronounce 'BMW' as "Bee Em Double You," you're pronouncing it wrong. The correct way is "Bay Em Vay."

If you pronounce 'Volkswagen" as "Volk's Wagon," you're pronouncing it wrong. The correct way is "Folk's Vaggen."

If you call an AK47, M16, or HK91 an "Assault Rifle," you're wrong. They were originally called Sturmgewehr, or Storm Gun, with the first one being the StG 44.
