New pc build. Lights and fans spun Then it shut off and repeated.

So I have built a new PC for my office use. I put everything together, sealed it up, Started. Everything was working but then it would not post. After 15-20 seconds it would shut off. Then start spinning again. I took everything out of the case and left one ram stick in. Same thing. I removed everything but the Cpu/stock heat sink, The power led and switch, I hooked up the 24 pin and the 4pin cpu. I turned it on. Same thing. Fans spun then after 20 seconds it restart. I then grabbed a second psu (also 500watts) and tried it. Same thing. So I took off the heat sink, put the back of my finger to the cpu. With my other hand on the psu kill switch I powered it on. Held it for 3 seconds, killed the power. The cpu did not heat up. At all. Is that a dead motherboard, faulty cpu, or something else entirely?

I am open to any and all advice as I have exhausted my knowledge, patience, and the Tom's Hardware check list.

Thank you

Mobo gigabyte h170n-wifi

Cpu i5 6500

psu Corsair cx 500

ram Hyperx fury 2133 ddr4

cruical m.2 275g

I wrote a guide for this, down in my signature you'll find the link.

The first thing you gotta try is testing outside the case. A very common cause for no post is a bit of metal shorting a circuit on the motherboard.

We have a NEW and GLORIOUSER-ER-ER PSU Tier List Now. (dammit @LukeSavenije stop coming up with new ones)

You can check out the old one that gave joy to so many across the land here

I have it out of the case. I have used two different power supplies. It does the same thing. I have tried the cmos jumper as well as removing and re installing the battery.

I still find it odd the Cpu doesn't heat up

I wouldn't even try to turn on the computer without a CPU cooler lol

Try both sticks of RAM, each in both slots. Also make sure you have all the needed connectors, sometimes we can all forget to plug in the EPS 8-pin one.

It only has a 4 pin for the cpu and I have tried both of my power supplies. I have tried it with one stick and 2 sticks. Same thing. There are no beeps as well. I don't know if that means anything.

Might be time to call Gigabyte for an RMA then :)

So you believe it is the motherboard not the cpu? That is what I was thinking but I was hoping it was something else. Thanks man.

It's one of both, but the motherboard's the problem more often so it's a good idea to try that one first.

If you could borrow a CPU known to be working, then you'd be able to make sure. And if you get a replacement and it still doesn't POST, at that point think about asking for a CPU RMA.

Well I got the replacement motherboard. Same thing. Replacing the cpu now.

Ah that's too bad. Actually I'd try RAM first, but the chances are similar.

As I was about to toss it out the window I found a forum post about how this motherboard does not play nicely with most ram. Found a list of compatible ones. Bought and installed them. No issues since. SO if anyone is reading this post still. CHECK YOUR RAM

Thank you Energycore. Thank you.
