6700K VS 6850K

6850k for less than $200?? Yea, just get that then. You can find good x99 boards for <$200 and will not be disappointed with the performance of the build, it's a beast of a CPU. 6700k is only marginally better in gaming (a few fps at most), but the 6850k is way better for workstation use.

Hey guys, 

 

I was in a dilemma between whether to get an i7 6700k or an i7 6850k. I have never built a computer, but as an engineering student, I will probably use it more for things like CAD and Solidworks and Photoshop than gaming. But thats not to say that I won't be gaming, I WILL MOST DEFINITELY be. Now Ill be getting them for about the same price (+$80 CAD for the 6850k). Which should I get? Should I try to get the over-powered for my needs 6850K or get the batter gamer 6700k? How much more do you think id spend on the required motherboard and other components for the 6850K as compared to the 6700k. Please let me know!

If you go for the 6850K you'll need an X99 motherboard and they tend to be quite a bit more expensive.

Honestly though a 6700k would probably be enough for what you need, a 6850k would be overkill.

How about 6800k? Remember if you get 6800k x99 mobo will be more expensive.

X99 boards are substantially more expensive and notoriously more difficult to deal with for a newbie. Honestly I'd go for the 6700k simply because it's a better top of the line yet still "consumer" level board whereas X99 is intended for workstations and requires quite a bit more thinkering (i.e. I've never seen a single youtube reviewer building an X99 rig that didn't at some point ran into show stopper issues with it, all brands of boards, they're just very finicky).

get a 5820k best sweetspot cpu. overclocked 5820k can match the 6700k in single thread.

nope x99 is vary easy to build in. futureproofing is what got my attention with x99 as intel slowed down to a crawl in innovation the x99 will last you at least 4 to 5 year without major cpu bottleneck.

Well if you go X99 go for 6800k or 5820k, there's no reason to spend the extra on the 6850k unless you specifically want 4 GPUs (or like 6 PCIe SSDs). If you don't need the extra PCIe lanes an OCed 6800k will perform exactly the same as the 6850k for $200 less.

Having issues with a Corsair AIO? Possible fix here:

Are you getting weird fan behavior, speed fluctuations, and/or other issues with Link?

Are you running AIDA64, HWinfo, CAM, or HWmonitor? (ASUS suite & other monitoring software often have the same issue.)

Corsair Link has problems with some monitoring software so you may have to change some settings to get them to work smoothly.

-For AIDA64: First make sure you have the newest update installed, then, go to Preferences>Stability and make sure the "Corsair Link sensor support" box is checked and make sure the "Asetek LC sensor support" box is UNchecked.

-For HWinfo: manually disable all monitoring of the AIO sensors/components.

-For others: Disable any monitoring of Corsair AIO sensors.

That should fix the fan issue for some Corsair AIOs (H80i GT/v2, H110i GTX/H115i, H100i GTX and others made by Asetek). The problem is bad coding in Link that fights for AIO control with other programs. You can test if this worked by setting the fan speed in Link to 100%, if it doesn't fluctuate you are set and can change the curve to whatever. If that doesn't work or you're still having other issues then you probably still have a monitoring software interfering with the AIO/Link communications, find what it is and disable it.

Never had a single issue with my X99 build...
