Hi All,
As I add more drives to my storage server, it has become clear to me that I need a new case to hold the drives (4 in a 1u chassis isn't enough) and a beefier power supply to power them (350 watt 1u unit with 1 molex and no sata power isn't enough either). I was wondering what case I should use that has at least 8 drive bays and is reasonably priced (so probably under $100 USD), I was also wondering what good power supply would be able to handle 8 drives as well as the rest of the system. My current idea: Case: NZXT Source 220 PSU: EVGA Supernova 650G1.

I was also wondering if it would be easier to get something like this DAS unit, as I have an LSI 9260-8i that I could possibly get SFF-8087 to SFF8088 cables to connect it to my main server.

As noted on the ebay page, that specific server is limited to 2TB drives - and I think that is a SAS1 (3Gbps) backplane as well.

Looking to buy GTX690, other multi-GPU cards, or single-slot graphics cards:

Although I don't personally have any hands-on experience with rackmount server equipment, I see a lot of good recommendations over on http://reddit.com/r/homelab regarding Lenovo's DAS units, and believe the SA120 is one of the models that comes up frequently.

Since it seems you're going for a tower, while a bit out of budget, the Corsair 750D can hold 12 3.5" Drives if you purchase two additional three drive cages.  It can also mount four 2.5" drives behind the motherboard.  And it also has 3x 5.25" drives which with simple adaptors could do 3 x 3.5 drives or with a more elaborate adaptor, hold 4x 3.5" drives for a total of 16 x 3.5" drives. :)

I may Frankenstein that into a DAS box, however I am wondering how I can expand my 8 port SAS card into 24 ports without a SAS expander board (are there any that would be low profile enough to fit in a 1u chassis vertically, I don't really need the pcie bracket) (do SFF 8087 splitters exist?)

Sas expanders don't seem to care about drive size, so that chassis should work with >2TB drives.

If you want a sas expander, id get this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816117207. You don't need the pcie slot and can just power iwht molex. Its basically a sff8087 splitter.

Yeah I may go that route, I am however debating just leaving it in the 1u case and just adding something like an intel ET2 card.

Ah, just wanted to comment that if you buy that SuperMicro 4U chasses, the backplane has a built in expander. You only need one SAS connection to it (Though two is preferred). Do note that it does run pretty loud. I own that exact chassis that @Electronics Wizardy links to.

I did modernize mine by swapping the backplane for a SAS2 version ($300) and a Platinum PSU ($200 per PSU). I got the newer PSU because the stock 80 plus PSUs (That come with the SuperMicro 4U chassis) were like jets even at idle.
