So we are making a study about encryption softwares and their features in everyday life and with the results we get, we’ll create a software with hopefully most optimal features for everyone to use. Part of our research is asking hobbyists (and why not professionals) opinions on what they want from an encryption software for securing their personal files. So we hope as many people as possible answer our little questionnaire. :)

Answering this questionnaire shouldn’t take more than a few minutes.

NOTE: Our study’s purpose is to study the features, not creating the most secure software ever, we really don’t have a chance competing on that level, of course we’ll do our best for the sake of security.

Ahem. Bitlocker is enough for most people and it's pretty much a default feature of Windows these days

The point is that the software should be available for everyone to use, easy to use and easy to share files with. There are people out there who like Linux or Unix based systems more than windows systems.

Not quite. Bitlocker is only available for Windows 10 Pro and Enterprise versions.

There is already PGP

Does PGP allow files to be decrypted without installing the software itself? Because one of our ideas is to create a software that could output files that could be decrypted without installing the software itself.

You could include PGP in every message but I do not think that is beneficial.

There was TrueCrypt or whatever but that's since been forked over to VeraCrypt which is pretty nice. I know it recently had an audit report come out but can't remember how secure they said it was. That's free encrpytion and should work for everyone IIRC.

Our goal is to make a software that outputs a file that can be decrypted without installing any software so the encrypted file could be easily shared with friends (or someone else) if needed.

And the key exchange?

The keys would be sent to others how ever they see would be the easiest or safest way. If thats what you meant.

So you are not planning to utilize asymmetric cryptography?

Unless the OS handles the decryption, you need some sort of medium software doing the decryption algorithm.

A portable variant is probably the closest you're looking for unless you wish to bundle the encrypted data in a large .Exe. However, Truecrypt and most likely veracrypt already have portable Downloaders.

Not yet at least. We are concentrating on encrypting personal files.

Then we could use 7zip which is already there. Create an SFX archive, enter a password and you are done.

We noticed that 7zip doesn't have official support on Linux or Unix platforms, since we are going to have 'official' support on Windows, Linux and Unix based systems.

EDIT: Plus for some people, 7zip could be too complicated
