AM2/AM2+ MoBo compatibity

I have another upgrading question....

I have an ASUS M2N socket am2 motherboard and i have a kinda low spec AMD 64 X2 5000+ in it. The question is that can i put like an AMD phenom in it which is quad core and a bit powerful? I have just realized that my games max out only the cpu not my gpu.
