So I was looking for a new router to replace my 5 year old router until I realized that I needed a modem and a router. I have pretty bad quality internet, averaging about 5mbps download. It's also is DSL internet so that's a problem when choosing a router/modem. What would you get recommend getting? I'm hoping to increase interent speed and range but I am having a hard time finding a good DSL modem to match with my new router.

PS: I know routers/modem wouldn't boost the speed you paid, but they should boost the speed I am getting on devices since I was using a 5 year old router.

Even five year old hardware is more than capable of well over 5mbps. N is theoretically capped at 450mbps, shitty N-routers would probably be around 150mbps theoretically over wifi -- so realistically like 40-100mbps depending on the distance between the router and client. So a new router won't necessarily improve your speeds. But it should impove the range.

What router do you currently have? How much coverage do you need (how many feet from the router)? What kind of speeds do you pay for?

See if your ISP bumped up speeds in the price brackets (and if you're eligible to get them, or if you are getting them). You can easily get 10x the speed you've been getting on your 5YO modem, and it should cost nothing or a 1 time upgrade fee if you're renting the modem from your ISP. I did it about 2 years ago.

Some companies will only offer low end garbage on low tier plans that can't do more than 5Mbps.

Not really since my router does not support ac wifi.

Even Wireless-N, which has been a standard for a decade (so all but the shittiest of shit routers from five years ago will have had Wireless-N), is capable of at least 40-100mbps depending on distance.

What router do you have? What speeds do you pay for? (Also, what kind of speeds do you get on a computer connected via ethernet)

I agree with most here. I have an N750 router and on my 75Mbps connection it does ok. The only reason to get a newer router is if you need AC. But if your router and modem and do the speeds you pay for then I would not suggest wasting money. If your router and or modem dies then you buy better.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.
