Future Proofness-i5 (insert number), or i7 6700 (k?)

Hello!

I want to create a really good gaming build for as cheap as possible, yet with as much futureproofness as possible. Right now I am gaming on a 1080p 60z monitor, but I will eventually upgrade to either a 1440p 144hz monitor or 1080p 144hz monitor sometime in the future. I will also be video producing (video recording, editing, etc). So I put together several builds, and I want to know what others think. I have, using PCPP, made 3 sets. A i7 6700 w/ GTX 1070, and another one with a Z170 mobo and higher quality PSU. I also have a cheaper one with an i5 6500 and GTX 1060. Now I have several questions. For my purposes of gaming and editing, probably with adobe stuff and such, would it be good to get the expensive i7, or go with an i5 6600 or 6600k, or even an 6500? And should I get the 1070 with an i5? I am concerned that the i5 series will bottleneck the 1070. Is it even worth it to get a 1070? I am trying to future proof it as much as possible (hence the Z170 mobo), because I don't plan on upgrading this for several years. Let me know if you'd like any additional details.

You defiantly want an i7 for video editing 6700K or 6800K is my pick. For GPU if you do more content creation then gaming you can save some cash and get a 980ti which performs better then a 1070 in non gaming orientated programs. But for "future proof" A 1070 has more Vram which never hurts.

Just keeping this here as a Well, there is that fact that a first gen nahlem i7 still performs well and will do video editing, slower than a current gen i7 mind you, but well as long as it is paired with a decent GPU. GPUs on the otherhand, have larger improvements than CPUs gen to gen (still not that much mind you).

But I'm no time traveller so I have no clue how two, or five years will treat your PC. So get as much as you can.

a 6700 with a h110 mobo MAY have more consistent performance over years of use, rather than a K that's OC'd.

It will also free up money for other things. Though I know a 6500 will do fine with recording and sony vegas.

 

GPU on the otherhand, this generation had quite the jump compared to the last gen, so skimping out on a 1070 and getting a 1060/480 instead to get a 6700k and a Z170 seems okay too, since the 580/1160 will probably outperform the 1070 and be a lot cheaper. I'm getting myself confused.

 

There's also ease of upgrading, upgrading a GPU will be a lot less work than upgrading your CPU/mobo, so if it was my build, I'd go for the better CPU and mobo, skimp on GPU for now, and upgrade GPUs when next gen comes out.

 

Important note: Comparing GCN (AMD) and CUDA (Nvidia), if you want the more futureproof card, go for an AMD card. If you want 1070 performance from amd, go for the Fury which is $260 on Newegg right now. The fury performs quite similarly (just a bit slower) than the 1070.

Do you think that a i5 6600k is good with the GTX 1070? Or do you believe I should get an i5 6700k and a gtx 1060, then upgrade said GPU later? Otherwise, any other recommendations? I don't plan on using editing softwares all the time. (usually premiere when i do) but every once in a while probably. Will the i5 make using premiere a really horrible experience? or will it be feasable?

For 144hz gaming you want quite a lot more CPU horsepower then for 60hz, so I'd recommend getting 6700k for that, which is also a good option for content creation or video editing. As for GPU. If you plan on getting 1440p 144hz 1060 is not a real option as far as "futureproofness" goes. Even the 1070 can't max out newest titles at 1440p and keep stable 60fps. 

 

If you don't have any reason to upgrade to 1440p monitor then I'd recommend i7 6700k and 1060 from your options. 1060 should be able to push 144hz at 1080p, although you might have to sacrifice some settings.
