I have to edit video for my school project. All I have to do is to make a video but I have to stop the footage and put my voice to explain stuff and when explaining is done, I have to resume playing my video.

What are simple and free basic editing programs that I can use??

DaVinci Resolve is what I generally recommend for ppl looking for something free, it's pretty damn powerful but doing what you're talking about shouldn't be too hard. That said, even windows Movie Maker would work

Does Windows 10 have movie maker?? I was not able to find it....

You can use 30 day trial versions for that.

Try Sony Vegas Movie Studio (now sold as Magix as Magix bought the software division from Sony) : http://www.vegascreativesoftware.com/int/vegas-movie-studio-product-comparison/

Click on learn more for the version you want to try and then on the 30-day free trial button.

The software allows you to add multiple audio tracks so you can record the audio voiceover separately using whatever software you like ( sony sound forge ,  adobe audition, goldwave, any free wave editor with recording capabilities) then insert the sound file(s) on separate audio track in the editor.

tip:  Adobe offers the old Adobe CS2 for free, because they messed up their activation servers and the original retail discs can no longer be installed by users (they don't register)

So you can create a free Adobe account (just needs a valid email account) then you can go to Downloads (small link in the footer on main page), then click on "Other downloads" and you arrive here : http://www.adobe.com/downloads/other-downloads.html

You can click on CS2 on that page and after checking some boxes saying that you understand that the software is outdated and you should get newer version, you can scroll down and click on the English section and you get a list of downloads of CS2 applications along with serial keys for them. So basically you get the full versions.

So in theory you can download from that page Adobe Audition 3.0 and Adobe Premiere.  While it's old, for recording your voice from the microphone, Audition 3 should be more than enough. You could edit your video with Premiere from that page, but it may not support your video codec directly and it's probably more complicated than Sony's Movie Studio.

No, I'm saying that if you need a software to record your voice from a microphone, Adobe Audition 3.0 from 7 years ago is as good as any.

For simple editing, provided it accepts whatever codec your videos use these days (h264 most likely), that old Adobe Premier 3.0 from 7 years ago could also be sufficient to edit a video the way he wants to (just cuts and audio overlays)

Davinci Resolve may have a higher learning curve compared to older software versions with fewer functions and features.

I actually like Sony Movie Studio and Vegas and found them both much easier to use than Adobe Premiere, that's why I recommended getting the trial version in the first place.

I admit I didn't have the time or opportunity to download and test DaVinci Resolve , it may very well be great and easy to use.

I simply recommended what I already tried.
