Hey Everyone,

So I'm planning on making a diy budget home NAS. I've drafted a part list, just wanted to get your guys opinions and suggestions.

CPU: AMD A6-5400K 3.6GHz Dual-Core Processor  ($34.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard: ASRock FM2A78M-ITX+ Mini ITX FM2+ Motherboard  ($54.98 @ Newegg)
Memory: Corsair 4GB (1 x 4GB) DDR3-1333 Memory  ($24.98 @ Newegg)
Storage: Seagate Pipeline HD 2TB 3.5" 5900RPM Internal Hard Drive  ($53.50 @ Amazon)
Storage: Seagate Pipeline HD 2TB 3.5" 5900RPM Internal Hard Drive  ($53.50 @ Amazon)
Case: Rosewill Neutron Mini ITX Desktop Case  ($9.99 @ Newegg)
Power Supply: Rosewill 350W ATX Power Supply  ($29.99 @ Newegg)
Total: $261.93

Anything glaringly wrong with it? Let me know.

Was I helpful? Accept my answer or agree / mark me as informative!

Quote me, or I probably won't notice you responded to me!

Only Constructive Criticism is taken into consideration.

Considering it's going to store all your stuff, I wouldn't trust Seagate drives and a rosewill PSU. You might have to spend a bit more but you won't find yourself crying over a charred computer case and/or on the phone with a data recovery company for 10 hours. That was sarcasm by the way, I don't think Rosewill PSUs are that bad, but you should probably invest in a slightly nicer one.

If you want true DIY, check your local Craigslist for any office PCs that are being sold that have first or second gen i3's or i5's in them, sometimes 3rd gen or Phenom X4 or X6 CPUs on some rare happenings. These usually have 4-8GBs of RAM also if the PSU already hasn't killed the system, it's usually fine especially since it's a nas and it'll be under no load. Could save yourself $50-$100

i7-6700k  Cooling: Deepcool Captain 240EX White GPU: GTX 1080Ti EVGA FTW3 Mobo: AsRock Z170 Extreme4 Case: Phanteks P400s TG Special Black/White PSU: EVGA 850w GQ Ram: 64GB (3200Mhz 16x4 Corsair Vengeance RGB) Storage 1x 1TB Seagate Barracuda 240GBSandisk SSDPlus, 480GB OCZ Trion 150, 1TB Crucial NVMe
(Rest of Specs on Profile)

Id probably buy a pre made NAS like this  https://www.amazon.com/Synology-Station-Diskless-Attached-DS416j/dp/B019ZUR5WQ

Its much lower power, and is more reliable.

100% agree the only time to build a NAS is when you need more than 4 drives worth of storage.
