I know its such a newbie thing to ask, but as far as I am aware I do not need to OC my cpu, nor could I if I wanted to. But how do I OC my gtx 1070 to run the Division at 60fps at 4k? Do I need to SLI, or could I at least see some improvement from an OC, and if so, should I use firestorm since I have a zotac card and that is what came with my card, or use afterburner, or something else?

Here are my specs:

  • CPU: Intel - Core i7-8700K 6-Core Processor OC @ 5.0ghz
  • Cooler: Cooler Master - Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler
  • Motherboard: Asus - Prime Z370-A ATX LGA1151 Motherboard

    • WD 4TB Black - Passport
  • RAM: Corsair Vengence RGB 2x8 RAM
  • Graphics Card: MSI - GeForce GTX 1080 Ti 11GB Founders Edition Video Card
  • Case: Corsair Crystal 460x
  • Power Supply: Corsair - CXM 650W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply

You'll see improvement, but you probably won't hit 4K60 without turning down some settings.

You can use any program that supports multiple card vendors (Afterburner, EVGA Precision X), just start by upping the power limit to the cap, and bumping up the clock speed by small increments (13 for Precision X).

ok, so max the power limit? Here's a screenshot of the program I plan on using. So if i unlock the power limit, the temp max goes up too, is there any danger of too much heat on the card?

Either max it, or set it to 111% (the cap on most GTX 10 cards). The temperatures won't change from this alone, you're just telling the card that it can use more power if it needs to.

Unless you have an EVGA FTW card without thermal pads, heat shouldn't be an issue. There are safeguards that will prevent the card from nuking itself.

To run a game like that at 4k 60 fps with a 1070, you will need to bump the settings down to around medium. As far as overclocking goes, you can find lots of overclocking guides on youtube. Just search up "gtx 1070 overclocking guide" and find one you like. Also remember that your cpu might bottleneck your gpu if it is too weak. What kind of cpu do you have?

Sweet. People had me thinking my whole rig is crap because I didnt buy a K version for OC, and also people give me crap for having a stock heat sync, is that going to actually be a problem here if im not even OCing the CPU?

Nope. Stock heat sink is fine. Linus actually did a video on the topic a while back. As long as the chip is not overheating, than performance will not be efeected by cooling.

Ok, I'll get started on upping the clock speed until it becomes unstable, then move it back a tiny bit.

Honestly, there is only a small benefit from overclocking. I have a 4770 (non k) and i'm super happy as I paid next to nothing for it.

Run Riva tuner or something (which comes with MSI afterburner) or if you have two monitors or more run HWmonitor on one of the monitors, and see if your CPU is running at 100% while the GPU is running much lower. If they're both running at about the same below 100%, you're good.
