Razer Blade Quality Issues

Hey all! I'm eyeing the new razer blade gtx 1060 as a replacement to an aging desktop a built. I'd be getting it with the core for about $2500 total. I can't quite find a solution like this anywhere else- single computer for on-the-go work docks into my three monitors at home with a GPU? Sign me up! I've heard bad things about razer products not lasting though. I'll definitely be buying from Amazon and with a warranty from them instead of straight from Razer, as I've heard this is much better, but have any of you guys had good/bad Razer Blade experiences to speak of? I know Linus is a fan of them!

My deathadder is working hard at the 7 month mark now, no issues (synapse sucks, though). Apparently the 1060 is UC'd so that the blade doesnt overheat. Should be safe.

Their Notebooks are a different story I haven't heard of any quality issues with them, also linus uses one everyday, if it wasn't quality it'd have broken by now and he'd have replaced it with something better.

Myself and a few friends of mine have had issues with Razer peripherals... but I haven't heard anything negative about Razer's laptops.

Yea, I had one Razer mouse and within a year it started having misclick issues, so I bought a G502 and not only does it feel better (quality wise) its been 2 years and it still feels like when I bought it.

I have the 2013 Razer blade and it's still going strong. Only issues i've had so far are

1. The webcam would make everything look green. This was a known issue, I just emailed razer support they sent me a firmware upgrade and it was gone.

2. When I put my speakers on loud I can hear distortion which is really annoying to me. This happens at medium-loud and higher but anything lower works just fine.

3. I love the separate mouse buttons but the right click has a weird double click feeling but works just fine.

 

Things I love, the trackpad is amazing, as long as I don't put the volume up really high the speakers are amazing, the keys feel good, boot is fast.

 

I just wish there was an SD card slot (not sure if you care about that but I do), also the screen is pretty bad but that's fixed on the newer models so not really relevant to you.

 

Oh right last thing, the keyboard gets pretty warm when gaming but my solution is using a separate keyboard and mouse while gaming at my desk. This could be a deal-breaker for some but honestly I don't know any laptop that has solved this problem at this form factor with the blade's performance. I suggest just gaming at a desk and not on the go but of course it works just fine in a pinch.

Alienware has the Graphics Amp that generally performs slightly better, maybe consider that too. It would also have much better cooling. As for experience I bought a mouse directly from them (Razer Imperator 2012) and after about a year it started getting stuck by only going vertical or horizontal after a bootup. Also now my left click sometimes multi clicks, or doesn't click I am going to contact them but I am sure I am well out of warranty even though I bought it off of their website.

I'm not really looking at alienware, the design is far too tacky for me. I don't really mind if the 1060 is underclocked for thermals, I can use the Core when I'm really gaming and if I need too I can fiddle with the thermal settings for the 1060.

I don't recommend razer. Get a core and a laptop with tb3 like the precision 5510.

I feel like you'd be paying a LOT of money for something that would underperform quite a bit. You'd have to buy a second GPU to make up for the 1060 you're already paying for not performing correctly, plus the Core which is pretty pricey. On top of that's there's some overhead bottlenecking of more powerful GPUs when used externally. Maybe look at the Clevo P650RP6 or MSI GS63VR instead?

when using TB3 eGPU then you loose about 20% of performance from the eGPU and then you also have the CPU bottleneck, a 6700HQ is MAX 1060, anything above and then you have a bottleneck, so if you go with a 1080 then you might only get 1060 or close to 1070 performance.

Then you also have the QC problems and the useless support and I mean useless...

If you put a 1070 in the core, the resulting performance is what most other laptops get out of a OCed 1060. LOL. A P650RP6 with Prema bios will perform as well as core + 1070.

You should. But you're paying a 200 dollar premium for better warranty and repaste warranty and not having to deal with Razer. Performance isn't going to change. There's too many odd issues with the Razer Blade at the moment. Beyond the throttling, tons of people report stuttering even after the TS fix. No idea why.

According to this review, the Razer Core performs a lot worse with the XPS than it does with the Razer Blade.

First of all, he wrote that review.

Second of all XPS15 now performs the same as the Razer

3rd of all 6700HQ bottlenecks THE SHIT out of it. I literally don't understand that cause your looking at the numbers on the page. For reference http://www.3dmark.com/fs/10867787 this is what a Clevo would get with a 1060. That's higher than a 1070 with the core. 

4th of all, Firestrike is already an optimized benchmark for the core. If you look a reviews comparing firestrike to actual game performance, Firestrike does much better.

Would you able to test the blades 1060 against other 1060 and desktop 1050ti benchmarks?, I would like to know if it is really power limited and how much. Because reading the benchmark thread on the Razer forum, they seem to have nice temps while getting some less performance.

Razer blade benchmarks compared with other similarly speced laptops like the Alienware 13 R3 all though I've seen people score around 9200s rather the 8700ish the reported in the article. I think it really depends on how lucky you get with a good Blade.

 

I'm honestly probably about to order a Blade from HIDEvolution (it's either that or a new Macbook). Talked with support and they said they'd handle the QC so long as you add some customization's. In my case I'll be adding a 960 Pro and Intel 8260 wireless card.

I honestly expect it to throttle a little and be hot and loud, but for my amount gaming hopefully it won't be too bad.

The blade is very expensive and significantly less powerful then the specs it boasts. The 1060 is down clocked to stop thermal throttling. Around 1000mhz when it should be around 1600mhz. The GPU also thermal throttles. The storage options they have are very expensive. All around if you want it to not game it is decent compared to a macbook. But for gaming it is a bad choice. You can get a much better price/performance ratio at the cost of .3in. and 2lbs.

Some run at normal clock speeds some don't, depends on the Blade from what I can tell. I'm just hoping if I order from HID they'll make sure it runs at it's full clock speed.
