I just need opinions about this card. How does this do? I may buy this. But is this really necessary though? There are sound cards half the price of this one. I don't see how this one compensates its price.

I'll be using this for gaming.

I'm ready to be enlightened.

Now, that was my intention initially. It was then i realised my mobo merely had pci-e slots. Most of the cheap sound cards require a pci slot. Thus, i leaned towards a bit more expensive models.

It should also be noted that i dont have many alternatives in my region.

But what you're saying is that xonar i linked in the OP would outperform an onboard audio, is that it?

I think you missed my point. What I'm asking is that whether high end headphones would make me hear a considerable overall quality difference between the onboard and the xonar. I do know my mediocre ones wouldn't.

It's an MSI Z170M Mortar.

So you are saying you are in the market for a "highend" headphone sometime in the near future?

Because in that case i'd definetely not go for some crappy soundcard solution and rather step up the game

to a nicer external amp/dac combo.

This thread by my good fellow descibes it very good and also lists some ideas.

No, that's unlikely to happen. I'm just trying to compensate the onboard audio failure.

Is that xonar truly a  "crappy" card? I know it's nowhere near a high end card but I think it's a decent card for a gamer.

Aaannd, that was not really an answer to my previous question :D

Yeah i'm trying to see what exactly you want to know ;)

So, the difference between a real dac/amp and onboard WILL be noticeable with good headphones.

A difference between some cheap card and onboard however will not really be there.

I wouldn't say it's a crappy card. The "higher end" ones probably are, price/performance wise, but the cheaper

ones are, like what you need, just a replacement for a failed onboard solution.

In your case i'd not go for something over 15€ and would probably scan the used market.

There are cards with 1x PCIE, 16x PCIE and even PCI.

You should get a 1x one.

Or something like a cheap USB dongle.

I know about that hdmi audio feature. I connected the computer to my television via hdmi. The sound worked fine throughout the test, no problems. But unfortunately my monitor doesnt have an hdmi input.. dvi is the thing :(

That's a usb sound card. Usually meant for laptops. I've seen some variants of this in my retailer. What I think is that these are even more likely to fail me.  You know, I'll be gaming for hours maybe, load the computer heavily and consistently. Thus, relying on a usb stick? Idk, I just dont feel comfortable with these.

Not sure about the interference topic though, it might come in handy. If i find a cheap version of usb sticks, I MAY buy one
