Why isn't my new cpu working?

I aquired this laptop quite a while ago. It is a k52f Asus laptop rocking a pentium p6200 and 2 gb of ram. I upgraded the ram to 6 gb no problem. But the i7-720qm is giving me a lot of trouble. My bios are updated and I have display drivers. Yet when I start the system it simply does nothing but spin the fan. What did I do wrong?

well most laptop mobos aren't designed for a other cpu than the one it comes with. So most likely your bios will not allow for that cpu. Even a bios update would not fix this. Is it officially supported by asus?

and one other thing: the i7 might just need to much power ...

The TDP is very similar unless under full load, and this laptop supposedly supports the entire line of socket g1/rPGA 989 processors. I just hope the chip isn't dead.

You could try resetting the BIOS to defaults, just in case.

That has fixed things in the past, but not this time. Thanks though!

I have a k53e (i think it is), and has an i7 2670QM CPU. I haven't changed the CPU though, I bought that model for the CPU... still pretty good TBH too, suits most of my needs when I don't have my desktop.

I can't think of anything it could be, unless the CPU isn't supported... but as you said earlier you checked and should be supported.
