Intel i3 vs old intel i5

Hi, recently my motherboard z77pro spoiled and couldnt find a replacement i am deciding to get a new i3 and new motherboard or to find back the old z77 motherboard

just wondering if the new i3 is faster and better than my i5 2500k z77 asus pro motherboard

and what is the best i3 right now in the market? ignoring the extreme edition thanks

the i5 is still better overall just the siingle threaded performance is a tad lower

since it is unlocked i5 it can be overclocked and then it will not have worse single threaded performance

The most cost effective i3 right now is the 6100. The best i3 is probably the i3-6300.

The i3-6100 has faster single core speed but it lacks the multiple cores of the 2500k. The 6100 is built on Skylake so you can upgrade to a 6600k or 6700k later.

Don't do it. It'd be a downgrade.

i3-6300 and and -3-6320 are the best: http://ark.intel.com/products/family/88394/6th-Generation-Intel-Core-i3-Processors#@Desktop

Obviously this is all too crude and general but I'd say going from any i5 to any i3 isn't worth the money if you game on the machine.

Specifically for 2500K and 6300, according to CPUBoss it's a tie at best if you value the iGPU as they do, which you probably don't: http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i5-2500K-vs-Intel-Core-i3-6300

i3-6320 is the best i3 atm, Kaby Lake might introduce a "K" version i3 SKU (though it's still an unconfirmed rumour)

When overclocked, i5-2500K has basically the same singlethreaded performance while being up to 50% faster multithreaded-wise, so going i3-6100 would be a downgrade overall. No point in doing that just to upgrade to 7700K/7600K in the future, it's better to stick with the current i5 and just gather more money for an upgrade.
