Headphones for gaming around $150

nkucz

Hey guys,

I need a pair of headphones to use while gaming, but I don't really want a gaming headset, I'd prefer a quality set of headphones. I know companies such as Audio-Technica, Beyerdynamic, and Sennheiser make quality headphones, but which are ideal for gaming? Any recommendations are appreciated, and my price range is ideally between $100-$150! Also, I don't really want to buy a soundcard or amp if that affects anything.

Thanks!

Yes I have heard all about it, still would prefer dedicated headphones and not a gaming headset.

Just get a Beyerdynamic DT 990 for $150. You'll be a happy camper

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0024NK344/ref=twister_B00WU2V08C?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

You could also be a happy camper with the Philips SHP 9500 for $72.

I personally own the Philips and you can game all day in them. They're super light & comfy with giant ear-cups. The sound is good too.

I would suggest the most expensive Audio Technica AD_00X headphone you can afford. They're fantastic for gaming.

Do I need an AMP or Sound Card for any of these headphones?

Definitely not for the audio technica headphones. They're pretty high sensitivity and pretty low impedance

I'd stick with Audio-Technica M50/M50x. I have had the DT990's and the SHP9500's. The DT990's have a bump @ in high frequencies that hurts and I felt that the metal earcup slides to extend the drivers were not very well designed. The SHP9500's had poor bass response and get very loose in the headband after a few months of use.

You have experience both the DT990's and M50x and prefer the M50x? SOO many choices this is difficult. Any thoughts on Audio Technica AD series headphones?

Audio Technica AD headphones have (almost) no bass at all.

BTW, you don't need an amp for any of the headphones listed.

Beyerdynamic DT770 (closed back) or DT990 (open back) from me.

I feel DT770 is better than M50X, so you can check that out. And it is better if you go have a try on these headphones :D

I'll put in a vote for the HD558s. Not too difficult to power and have nice soundstage  (works wonders for games). People describe them as a bit "warm," it does feel like there's a bit of focus on the low end but they're not boomy or muddy. There's plenty of detail. If you want something less warm and more high focused the HD 598s are an option. Afaik the offerings 5x8 series use the same drivers, just have different signatures.

Would these headphones be used for games and nothing else? Would you listen to music (any particular genres of artists?), watch TV shows or podcasts? A lot of "gaming" headphones might exaggerate highs to make footsteps stick out but that can end up being painful when you use them for anything else. Would you use them in a noisy environment?  Opens are great for longer periods of use as they don't heat up, I could wear the 558s for days and days without a break and I wouldn't care. They can make you feel like you're immersed in the sound too but they will let in sound from outside. Computer fans and keyboard noise is no big deal but if you live next to a noisy road it might not be so great.

If you can, see if any audio or general tech shops stock what you're interested in and ask if they'll let you try some on. There are a lot of factors that can change the sound of headphones and it can be difficult to know what you might get without hearing it your self as each of us have different tastes and different ears so what one person would like or can hear, another person might dislike or be unable to hear.

i would go for the DT990, i would only go for the dt770 if its a really really noisy like kids that scream next to you 24/7 but other then that. i would go with the dt990 since the moment you put on some music you cant hear if someone is talking to you.

I have the ak 612 pro.... they are open back and I'm liking them! light weight and no stress at all on the head/ears.... I would suggest them to you... they have quite thick jack, they do not have deteachtable cable and they have a bit of high impedance , but they work perfectly both from computer and smartphone! they have a super long cable, if you are interested in it! I really suggest them!!

Edit: for gaming they are very good, I used to have some closed back headphones that were not super good... with these you can really hear a lot better and understand from which direction the sound comes.... if you try for example to hear the footsteps on the other side of the wall in csgo , when you turn you can feel them either right or left or above .... they are veeeery good!

nope .... I have a lenovo y50 70 laptop... so if I usually would have put like to 30 the volume, with those I need a bit more like 45-50.... but for example with my nexus 5x I can hear with less problem.... and they are even too loud maxxed....

you can find some reviews on youtube... like bernacules has done 1....

Edit: just for reference... they are so comfortable that even after almost 6 hours of straight gaming they don't hurt at ALL!!! aand they make you sweat a bit after a while playing during SUMMER ... but hey there were almost 40°C outside....
