Go to the App Store and see if you can find the 10.10 update. But since 10.11 is already out for a while, doubt the 10.10 update is still available.

i have 10.11 running on my 2008 iMac... i think you're fine.

The app store allows you to update to the latest version it supports.

Yea that's what I was thinking. Never owned a Mac before but I would assume they wouldn't keep an update to a older version in the App Store.
