Need a gaming/university work laptop for a friend

Yatys 93

budget is at a push £1000 but preferably less, nothing fancy needed, he is doing game design in uni so gaming and 3D rendering, as well as basic use stuff.

he is looking at this currently: https://www.amazon.co.uk/MSI-Leopard-1087UK-15-6-Inch-Notebook/dp/B01FM53NZ6/ref=sr_1_20?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1479248175&sr=1-20&keywords=gaming%2Blaptop&th=1

thoughts and suggestions would be great

YEAH GAME DESIGN CLUB!!!  Anyway, for gaming and rendering etc it would definitely be better to get a desktop which no doubt you've heard before but if mobility is not essential then I would try and go that route, it will drastically increase render times on stuff for game design courses.  Other people I know on my course have laptops where it takes them 5-7+ hours to package a map in UT4 where my 6700k does it in less than 10 minutes,  now obviously you don't NEED a 6700k but it's always nice.

But that laptop does look pretty good but for gaming I would try and find something around the same specs but with a 1060 because it's just better flat out.

And a tip for your friend that you can pass on if you want is;

have 3 places of saving your work: on-site (on the pc), portable (flashdrive etc) and off-site like OneDrive or Google Drive.

i5 12600k | ASRock Z690M-ITX 32GB Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 3200MHz | EVGA 2080 Super Black | Samsung 970 EVO Plus 500GB + 980 1TB | Corsair RMx 650W | Thermaltake Tower 100 White

You could get a refurbished Alienware 15 R2 or 17 R3.  They get great battery life and are built tough.

UPDATE-System was 6820HK, 980M, 16 GB RAM, 1080P screen, etc.  Website crashed so it might not work for you.  I definitely recommend giving the Dell Outlet a look.

I have been trying to find a 1060 version but there doesn't seem to be anything in this price point, and ya he needs to be able to move it around so desktop is a no no for now at least,

I'd wait for black friday sales, I believe Asus has great laptop sales. You can also check out newegg and amazon sales for those. I can't recommend one from the sales, because I don't know the sales by heart, but you should be able to get a lot more bang for your buck.
