Okay.

To begin with I want to add that everything I've bought is used, nothing is brand new out of the box.

I bought this:
i5 3570K (with stock cooler)

HD 7850

Gigabyte Z86AP-D3

A 400W and a 700W PSU (both which work just fine)

And a used windows on an HDD (also tested on 2 other PC's without issues)

What happens is that whenever I try to start windows normally I get the windows startup logo but then everything either:

  • Goes black and stays that way
  • Shuts down immediately
  • BSOD for 0.3 seconds
  • Loops the startup forever (goes black, dies, starts again)

I've realized I can get in to windows with Safe mode, so there's that.

Bios are up to date.

For some reason my CPU seems hot though, even just in bios. I've applied thermal paste with the stock cooler (cleaned off old of course) but it stays on about 65C in BIOS.

A bit too much if you ask me. Could overheating be the issue?

Might alos be worth to mention that I've tried another HDD with windows 8.1 preinstalled, also worked flawlessly on two other PC's.

Did you do a clear Cmos when you got the motherboard?

I would say there are drivers on the Windows partition that are trying to load and failing which is causing the problems.

Have you gone into safe mode and uninstalled all the drivers?

It's not a race to the bottom.

Yeah, I cleared CMOS. (If that means taking out the battery for about a minute then yes)

Hmm, no I haven't tried that.. I'll get to it!

Thanks!

What happens is that whenever I try to start windows (7 in this case) normally I get the windows startup logo but it stops about there. Going into windows repeir does the same.

  • Bios are up to date.
  • Chipset drivers and important things installed while in safe mode.
  • CMOS reset.
  • Tried turning on AHCI in both bios and Windows via REGEDIT

Might alos be worth to mention that I've tried using another HDD with windows 8.1 preinstalled, also worked flawlessly on two other PC's.

What's confusing is.. Everything SHOULD work.

CPU is doing its thing in Safe Mode and the motherboard should be intact since I can, well, use it.

I've also considered making a clean install with windows, but since BOTH of my two harddrives are working fine on 2 different PC's with windows booting up with no problem I doubt that should be it.

Am I missing something? Please help.

Oops, read that wrong. xD. I never had such a problem before, so I'm useless at this point. Sorry.

It is said that an Italian dies every time Spaghetti is broken.

That's why I break mine twice.

Try removing all hardware that is not absolutely necessary.  (Start the windows install with only CPU, Mem, Power, Motherboard (onboard graphics)).

Also you may want to try a different install medium.  IE... get a different install file set

I did, tried all that with both USB and DVD.

1. ISO-file on DVD.

2. Set DVD as first in boot priority.

3. Boot via DVD.

4. Installation should begin.

Doing this gives me a windows logo after "windows is gathering files".

Then try using a USB drive instead.

And why are you using windows 7 when 10 is available?

Here are a few things to try:

1. Go into bios and disable UEFI

2. Go into bios and disable SecureBoot (enable legacy boot, it may be enabling "Launch CSM" that will do the trick)

3. Go into bios and toggle legacy USB support

Basically, I think it is your bios.

Otherwise, it could be a hardware problem.  Though for your sake I hope it is not.

USB gives the same results.

I had W7 laying around!

Try resetting your bios to optimized defaults, and try using a different USB drive or a USB drive with windows 10.

OK.

I basically can't find these settings in BIOS. I feel like it's a big mess.. The sections are wierd.

I did find USB Legacy but that was already enabled.

What do you mean by Disabling UEFI?

Secureboot was not a thing, couldn't find it at all.

My BIOS here:

http://download.gigabyte.eu/FileList/Manual/mb_manual_ga-z68ap-d3_e.pdf

The bios page is 29.

I've tried optimized defaults and fail safe defaults, no difference.

Willa windows 7 key work with windows 10?
