Hey everyone, I'm currently trying to finalize a build but I recently looked through Tom's Hardware forum on the 5820k vs 6700k. Most of them were saying the 5820k/x99 is better than 6700k/z170.

My new build is:

So my question is which side is better? I know that theoretically the 5820k is better on optimized games and is a 'good' overclocker, but the 6700k is better in terms of single core speed.

I'm not too sure which is better in terms of performance/cost because I'm on quite a tight budget and could use some help on this.

Edit: Which platform will be more futureproof too?

this depends on what you are going to use the system for. if you only plan on playing games, then the 6700K will be the best option. will you be doing multicore workloads like editing? then the 5820K is the better option.

What if both and does editing apply to VMs?

editing is just an example i used. mainly, you want to find out if the programs you use rely more on clockspeed or multicore performance. i have next to no experience with VMs, but i believe they benefit from multicore more then higher per core performance, so i would think the 5820K would be the better option there. though as i mentioned, i have no experience in VMs.

I believe that in VMs having 6 physical cores would be extremely beneficial as you have more cores/threads to assign to individual VMs
