EVGA heating problem

@Railgun I didn't get a response to my question on the EVGA forums. I'm pretty sure that the VRM and backplate pads will be installed on new EVGA 10XX cards, though, since EVGA is installing them on old cards that people send to them.

Thanks for trying. I bought my 1070 the other day so I'll let you know if it has them lol

So, I have a replacement 1070 SC sitting on my dining room table, nice and neatly sealed in its box. I'm sure it's a refurb and not a new card, but I could still probably pull in $300-350 for it. That would still leave me with a pretty big gap to make up if I wanted to replace my EVGA Chinese firecracker with a 1070 that isn't somewhat likely to explode during CS:GO or FSX.

Have 1070 SC cards been having similar problems to the 1080s that are going off like a parade on Chinese New Year, or am I more or less safe using the new 1070 SC? I'm hesitant to break the plastic seal on the packaging until I've made up my mind one way or another, because that plastic seal is the difference between a $350 sealed in-box card and a $300 used card.

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

Don't buy evga if youre that worried about it.

All EVGA 10XX cards with the ACX3.0 cooler are vulnerable to the thermal issues, unless they have the updated BIOS and thermal pads mod installed. That includes the SC.

If you have a replacement SC that EVGA has installed thermal pads to, then it should no longer be at risk.

If the replacement SC you received came in full retail box, then it probably is not used, but a new card. I think that the refurbs are shipped in some special RMA bag, and not a box. If your SC was 30-days or less old when you RMA'd it, you'd get a new card. If you had owned it for more than 30 days, you'd get a refurb - according to EVGA forum staff.

I've been buying EVGA cards for years. My 1070 SC was purchased months ago (in August, to be exact), so that ship sailed long before I wrote the above post that you seem to have not read.

Huh, guess I got a brand new card then.

It's not so much the overheating that has me worried. It's the reports of (and spectacular video of) 1070 FTWs and 1080 FTWs quite literally exploding in the case. Of course, I've only seen the explosions on FTW cards, which have different PCBs from the SC (reference) boards, and that's got plenty of people asking if it's actually bad board components and not just heat causing things to go boom. That's just a hell of a "maybe" to roll with, especially considering that Z97 mATX motherboards are just this side of impossible to find should something go wrong and cook the board.

I did read it, that's why I quoted it. Unless you bought the card knowing the issue, the simple solution is to swap brands or deal with it.

...thanks, I guess? I mean, did you read the post, or just seize on an opportunity to be clever? Because the question I posed was which of those simple solutions was the right one. I'm pretty...ok, really aware of the fact that keep the card or replace the card are the options here. That's, like, common sense. So, thanks. I mean, if you really set out to help, thanks. I don't think you did, and if you did, you're not very good at it, but if you did seek to help by giving an irrelevant answer then stating what I'd already laid out as obvious, thanks. I guess.

You're welcome I guess. If you went out and got a screw driver I guess. You're welcome. Or you managed to figure something out on you're own. You're welcome, I guess

Not exactly sure what's up your ass, but there are better ways to answer a question.

Your responses. I thought your come back to my gold star comment was funny, but the screwdriver comment was unnecessary in the first place. Plus aisle9 asked a simple question looking for useful answers. Considering the video card's expense, I don't think it's an unwarranted question. If you were trying to be helpful then that's fine, but as he said, it kinda seemed like you used it as an opportunity for some wise cracking comment.
