I am looking to upgrade my graphics card in my HP Pavilion 550-027c to a r9 380x. To do this I will also need to upgrade my power supply to 550 watts. I am wondering if this will be bad for the other components in my computer. Could I get a new power supply with out damaging my computer?

Welcome to the forums. A new, better power supply will not harm any components. The APu you have isn't great but it should game fine on lowered settings with a 380x no problem.

When in doubt, re-format.

A more powerful power supply will not damage components.

Just make sure you are buying one from a reliable brand like seasonic or something, otherwise you risk burning down your house.

i looked on cnet and the psu is a 300w im assuming it is not a unit with great quality or efficiency and the r9 380x might be too power hungry for it. you should look at the new 1050 ti which will almost guaranteed would work as most models do not require aux power and draw power from the pcie slot. imo the 1050 ti is a safer bet than getting 2x 2 molex to 6 pin adapters. if the psu is atx and not some weird form factor you should have no problem upgrading it. cheers.

You might be able to run an RX 460, It does not require and additional power from the PSU however I dont know what the PSU is like in that computer. If your current PSU is 400W or more, you should be fine according to the recommended PSU wattage for the RX 460.

Then u need to buy it.
Buy either Antec edge 550w or seasoni s12ii 520 if u are on tight budget.
And yes of course if u buy r9 380x your CPU will bottleneck it. and The r9 380x wont be able to use its full potential because of your cpu.

Correct me if I am wrong but if I buy the rx 470 I won't need to buy a new power supply. I believe the RX 470 uses 120W and my PSU is 180W.

What exactly is your power supply?

120w for gpu only what about the other part?

make sure that 180w is continuous power not max.

and even its continuous i still recommend u to change it because a 180w watts power supplies...Just dont.

U dont want to blow up your rig because a faulty PSU.

But if u still insist..well go on.

But dont blame me if something bad happen..

It is 180W continuous. What should I change my PSU to?
