Is overclocking THAT easy?

So yesturday I was at a friends house, and I just put his new GPU in, Asus Turbo 6GB 1060.

 

He was getting small lag on planetside 2 in huge battles so he wanted to overclock. He downloaded GPU Tweak and overclocked it.

 

Now, bearing in mind, this guy has -NO- idea about computers. When I was building his PC, he said " why do you need to get me a cpu cooler i dont need one". He has no clue how to build a PC, he doesn't know about the osftware on a PC, he is a noob to PCs.

 

I told him i've never overlclocked a GPU but I have a CPU, and with a CPU I said you needed to up the voltage and clock together slowly.

He went into GPU Tweak 2 and just put the voltage 20% higher and shoved the clock to the max and clicked apply. I ran 3d furmark and he clocked it to 2000 ( it defintiley worked ) and it only hit 80c max.

 

Is he just very lucky his GPU took it so well, or is GPU overclocking not as hard and gentle as CPU overclocking? Also, why was he able to clock it straight to the max without problems,. on a reference card?

GPU overclocking is both easier and safer than CPU overclocking.

Cpu overclocking requires a little restraint as it is possible to destroy the chip if you are not careful where as GPU overclocking is easier and not really a risk at all even if you don't have a clue since the tools used have safeguards built in due to the GPUs bios interaction

As long as he isn't BIOS modding he can't kill the card. If you want to do it properly then it isn't easy and takes a long time but easy as in slide the dial more then yes very much so

A lot of facepalm in the OP, lol. No offense. :P 

 

It is very easy to OC a GPU, BUT you shouldn't just crank all the sliders all the way up. You also shouldn't add voltage as many GPU's can OC quite high without needing any added voltage. Adding voltage is what increases the heat output mostly. You should also increase the clocks in moderate intervals, testing each increase as you go. Once you find the limit, dial it back a bit. 

 

So in a sense, your friend is very lucky it worked and didn't black screen. That's not to say it won't black screen the way he has everything turned up though.
