Good afternoon guys!

I am relatively new to computing of sorts and I have a problem.

My mother has a laptop (Acer Aspire E1-571) and it is VERY slow. When I mean slow, I mean SLOW. I have done the usual: delete unwanted programs/CCleaner/virus scan etc... and it is STILL so slow! There is pretty much no programs installed on it as it was factory resetted 2 weeks ago! The only programs to be installed are Google Chrome / CCleaner & NOD32 anti-virus, apart from that, it's as clean as can be. All the standard programs you get with an Acer laptop have gone (junk) and it is horrendously slow! Can any of you guys help?

Laptop specs are:

Acer Aspire E1-571

Intel Core i7 (2.2GHz with turbo boost up to 3.2GHz)

Intel HD Graphics 4000, up to 1760MB Video Memory

6GB DDR3 RAM

500GB hard drive

ANY help would be appreciated, thanks guys!

Steven

how old is it? my guess would probably be the hard drive. Some hard drives just get outdated or get worn out, slow down, and then die. My old laptop had a terrible hard drive in it but fair hardware, just old hardware. I put an SSD in it and it became useful again and even on par with some newer laptops if not better

The laptop was bought in 2013. It started off great for her but now, it feels like an old 1990's computer with how slow it is!

That i7 should still be excellent, I still run an i7 2670 in my laptop with an SSD that I added and it still flies. Just add an SSD and you should be ok.

Could do. You have any recommendations on cheap SSD's? The laptop only gets used for browsing the internet by my mother.

Backup her documents, then make a new user account on the computer, if it runs better, restore backups.

Worked for a few laptops which have run like crap even when cleaned of infection.

PC - NZXT H510 Elite, Ryzen 5600, 16GB DDR3200 2x8GB, EVGA 3070 FTW3 Ultra, Asus VG278HQ 165hz,

Mac - 1.4ghz i5, 4GB DDR3 1600mhz, Intel HD 5000.  x2

Endlessly wishing for a BBQ in space.

That's even if I get the chance to make a new account! It freezes as soon as it logs into the main account. Just right clicked on my computers to inspect the specs, still waiting for it to load, clicked that 5-10 minutes ago...

OK, I have another suggestion for you then... if your mother only uses it for internet browsing I would install a linux image on the laptop personally. Something like this https://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=elementary

It'll be much faster than windows, but make sure your mother is only interested in web browsing first, as the linus build is great, but not easy to do other things on unless experienced. You could dual boot it, that is, install it alongside the windows image, so that windows is still there for a backup in case she want sto do other things also.

The SSD would still be good too, but I would try the linux build first as that might be enough without paying out more money.

Give it a run with Hitman Pro, you can use a 30day trial.  Then a run with RKill.exe you can get both from BleepingComputer.

If you have not yet, also throw in MalwareBytes.

I'm not so computer technical myself but I can always try! Might have a try tomorrow when back from work in the morning! Cheers!
