Cheap server

Me and my friend already have a server which is debatable at the best of time 

 

Its got 4gb of ddr2 

AMD X64 cpu (Lol|) 

and a r7 240 (Don't ask) 

 

What would be a low powered (needs to be quick) server we can buy/build? Thanks!

An i3, 4-8GB of RAM, no need for a GPU

 

maybe an i5 if you find a good deal. Go used. Maybe 3rd or 4th gen CPUs

What are you using it for?

 

My Lenovo TS130 is great and faster than it needs to be, I'm sure you could find something along the lines of that (prebuilt microservers).  I use it as a plex server, and it has no problem transcoding a few 1080p streams while playing music for another user.

 

Or get an old mac mini, stuff the biggest drive you can into it, and place it on top of an external enclosure full of drives.

 

Or if it's only for file access, just get a router with a USB3.0 port on it and plug in an external drive.

SFF-ish:  Ryzen 5 1600X, Asrock AB350M Pro4, 16GB Corsair LPX 3200, Sapphire R9 Fury Nitro -75mV, 512gb Plextor Nvme m.2, 512gb Sandisk SATA m.2, Cryorig H7, stuffed into an Inwin 301 with rgb front panel mod.  LG27UD58.

 

Aging Workhorse:  Phenom II X6 1090T Black (4GHz #Yolo), 16GB Corsair XMS 1333, RX 470 Red Devil 4gb (Sold for $330 to Cryptominers), HD6850 1gb, Hilariously overkill Asus Crosshair V, 240gb Sandisk SSD Plus, 4TB's worth of mechanical drives, and a bunch of water/glycol.  Coming soon:  Bykski CPU block, whatever cheap Polaris 10 GPU I can get once miners start unloading them.

Buy a cheap desktop or just any old random computer. 

 

Do you need things like dual psus, and ecc for it?

Plex, minecraft server, file transferring etc

I7 2600 + cheepo motherboard and 4-8GB RAM, harddrives and such can be taken from old server

I spent $2500 on building my PC and all i do with it is play no games atm & watch anime at 1080p(finally) watch YT and write essays...  nothing, it just sits there collecting dust...
