hi all, because of recent events, i need a new cpu, motherboard and ram. and because of my budget, i cant get intel like i would like to, so i am considering AMD as an option, but i would like to know about the difference between the different types, like Athalon, FX series (piledriver) and phenom, and the advantages of each, and how they compare to different intel series, such as i3, i5, i7, Xeon and core 2.

Also, as an extra, i think it would be better to reask this in this sub thread topic.

What would be recommended for stuff like gaming, but also editing, if i have a budget of 200 GBP, what would you recommend to fit in RAM, a CPU and a Motherboard, for gaming such as BF4 and the latest titles, something that can be upgraded later, and for editing with video, photo, and animation as i am doing a media course at college. if i wait till christmas when i get more money, i will probably go for an intel rig with an i5, 3570k and overclock it. so if there is anything to compare to that. Also, i would be gaming at 1080p at 120Hz where posible.

Current Rig Spec of parts i have already:

CPU:N/A

RAM:N/A

GPU: PNY GTX 760

MOBO: N/A

PSU: Corsair CX600

Monitor: Hanns-G HS233 120Hz 1080p

i have no idea about PNY ram... if you will ever need more than 16 gb ram, then pick only 2 sticks. i just decided to put this in because its 16 gb, quad channel 1866, so its fast for rendering and work

make sure you have good airflow in your case. maybe even pick hyper 212 if you dont have cpu cooler yet, so its quieter, cooler and you can overclock a little.

My only tip is don't get a cheap motherboard the amd fx 8 cores fry cheap motherboards make sure you get a decent 990 fx board with proper from cooling

yes http://www.overclock.net/t/946407/amd-motherboards-vrm-info-database

gigabyte has cheapest and best performing 990 boards, even 970 one has 8+2 phases

everything that everyone seems to have put is more than 200 GBP, that is my best case cerario for money, but not sure how much i m going to get from the refund of my parts. so, if you wouldnt recommend a cheap motherboard, with the FX, series. then what would you recommend?

also... no body answered my original question!!! which is what i want to know more. so i can research parts for myself...

The FX-8350 = An i5 in regular programs but is better in gaming for the new titles

And Core 2 is just the older Intel chips

you could do something similar to my build. 200gbp comes out to about $325, I bought a FX6350 for 139.99, and a ecs a990fxm-a for $126 and that will leave you about $50 to get your choice of ddr3, and 1600mhz is fine for what you are doing. I would also suggest picking up a cooler master hyper 212+.

Fx series is great for heavily multi-threaded loads not as good for loads that rely on single thread performance, but fx is still better than phenom II for single thread performance, and in gaming my 6350 keeps my frames as high as my graphics card can get them.

As a few have suggested, at that budget point, the best would be a FX-8350 and a suitable motherboard. You could drive the price down a bit by going with an FX-8320 instead. Essentially, it's a lower speed FX-8350, but it's based off the same chip.FX-8350 is clocked at 4.0GHz from factory, while the FX-8320 is clocked at 3.5GHz. The only drawback is that, the FX-8320 may not overclock as high...the FX-8350 is already guaranteed to run at 4.0GHz.

I would not get a FX-6350 - it's essentially a factory overclocked FX-6300. The FX-6300 is clocked at 3.5GHz from the factory versus 3.9GHz for the FX-6350.

About the CPU families, that is another part of your question.

"Core 2" series was the predecessor of the "Core i" series - they were essentially the "great grandpas" of the Ivy-Bridge / Haswell "Core i" CPUs that you see today.

Pentium / Celeron CPUs are, lower-end, lower power, budget CPUs.

The "Core i" series are...Intel's better performance chips. It begins at core i3. i5 is another step up the tier. i7 is another step higher.

Xenon is Intel's workstation / server line of CPUs.

The i3 / i5 / i7 product line for aimed a general consumers (gamers, day-to-day use, etc). Professional editors, graphics renders, servers (just to name a few) are the primary target for the Xenon CPUs.

Similarly on the AMD side...

The Phenom (I / II) line-up were the predecessor for the current socket AM3+ FX processors. Again, they were like the "grandpas & fathers" of the FX chips.

Sempron are AMD's low-end, low power CPUs (like Intel's Pentium / Celeron).

Athlon (I / II) are AMD's mid-range CPUs.

Just like Core i3 / i5 / i7, the FX line-up works the same way; FX-4XXX / FX-6XXX / FX-8XXX.

AMD's Opteron processors are their own version of workstation / server chips (like the Xenons)

As of now, the APUs (i.e. A10-6800K) are in a league of their own...
