GTX10*0 variations

Andzon

Hey,

Why are there so many god damned different GTX cards? Is there an absolute definitive best version, or why would you pick one over the other? I'm buying one, which one is the best, period?

You need to pick which series you want first:

GTX Titan X (pascal) - Ultra 4k gaming

GTX 1080 - 4k and 1440p high-end gaming

GTX 1070 - 1440p and 1080p 144hz gaming

GTX 1060 6GB - Ultra 1080p 60 Hz gaming

GTX 1060 3GB - Pretend this doesn't exist

GTX 1050ti - 1080p gaming and e-sports

GTX 1050 - Light 1080p gaming

Edit: Forgot the Titan X

The Titan X (Pascal) is the best GPU on the market now, followed by the GTX 1080.

How the naming works on Nvidia videocards:

The first one or two numbers are the generation, the second/third number is the 'tier' of GPU and Ti is better than non Ti.

Examples:

GTX 1060: 10 = tenth gen (Pascal). 60 = tier 60 in the tenth gen, so it's better than the 1050 and worse than the 1070.

GTX 970: 9 = ninth gen (Maxwell). 70 = tier 70 in the ninth gen, better than the GTX 960, worse than the GTX 980.

Sorry if I was unclear, I am well aware 1080/Titans are the best ones. I was just thinking of the name variations, ASUS, AMD.. why are there several? Are they different or what? It's too complex. If I buy the ASUS one will it be significally different from the EVGA one? Or is it just branding?

There wouldn't be much differnce in performance between each, just buy the cheapest or the one you like the most (Dont buy the founders edition).

EVGA hybrid GTX 1070 will be the quietest and stay the coolest because it is water-cooled (MSI and Gigabyte also have water-cooled variants that are pretty much the same).

All in all you will not see a big difference in performance between the different models. Maybe 2-7 fps variation depending on the game. I personally use the Asus Strix gaming 1070 and I'm very pleased with it so far.

Yes, the board partners have their own slight variation of the card with different coolers and software included. They will all perform about the same though.

The chips are provided by Nvidia. Each board partner (EVGA, Asus, MSI, etc.) is then allowed to tweak the pcb and cooling solution. They will often improve upon the Nvidia reference version (founder's edition) by improving cooling and overclocking capability. But at their heart, they all use the same chip which is provided by Nvidia.

Perfect! Now one question is, which of these board partners are garbage? Anyone in particular that I should stay away from?

They will all perform around the same, what you should focus on more is features.

What kind of outputs do you want? You want a water cooled card? What about software features of each card? Those will matter more than performance difference.

We should have a sticky post going over the 10x0 series and how they are the same/different.

Here is how it shakes down for the entire line up.

Each version will perform almost the same after an overclock is applied to them. The differences are there however. Mainly the cooling and efficiency. However, with a vast amount of my own testing and reading others reviews the conclusion is this. The difference is rather small. Sure, you can say you have a GTX 1080 FTW or what ever, but the standard 1080 from evga will perform nearly identical if you over clock it yourself.

So, with that said thermals may be your issue. That will require some research to see which option best works for your budget and application. No two situations are the same so take what someone tells you and what you read with a grain of salt. "Millage may very"...quote applies here.

Ideally, if you want to over clock the real difference is aesthetics and cooling, however, most cards perform close to the same even in thermals. At least close enough to make one jump up as the best overall.

So in conclusion...the card the works with your budget and color combo is what is best. Unless you don't want to over clock, then that is different. However, only so much as boost 3.0 runs the show anyway.
