Try to squeeze in an RX 470. It's worth the extra. Other than that it looks fine to me.

they're not the best but not outright horrible. they'll do fine for a low-end rig(have a 500gb hdd variant, works well).

Please don't. It will ruin your entire build imo. I went from a 750 ti and a AMD 6300 to a 4690k and a  970 over a period of time. But let me tell you this... I NEVER had a better upgrade than a SSD. ANd it will be really hard to upgade. You will have to like wipe your HDD, its a tedious process and you will probably loose some personal data. A graphics card can be upgraded within minutes.

Boot times aren't everying. Its about the experience. When you hit start and you get this laggy little popup that freezes half way through. And your Chrome takes 30 seconds to launch, and just doing a simple windows search is longer than a monday,, Its terrible. My brother doesn't have a SSD and it SUCKS. My system is SOO much more graceful. And IMO 1TB is overrated. Unless you are a content creator or insist on having your WHOLE library of 100 games installed on your computer, I don't know WHY you need 1TB

If this is just a gaming machine, you don't really care about it, AND JUST WANT graphics powerrer. get a new GPU. otherwise get the SSD. Everyone I know that got an SSD didn't regret it at all.

Well that is a valid argument. you got to decide what is more important to you:

Mass files (buy a bigger drive)

FPS (buy a better GPU)

Gracefulness (get a SSD)

Personally I would get a SSD. In games, there really isn't a big difference, but you will appreciate it SO much if you do anything other than just games. And it also so convenient to just restart when you need to and you know you will be into your game again within the minute.

an rx 460 has the performance of an r7 370, the 1050ti has the performance of just slightly below an r9 380. the 1050ti does have a massive performance gain over the rx 460. don't bother with slightly faster boot times, just make a 100-200gb partition to use as the boot partition and clone that over to an ssd if he chooses to buy one.

Don't get a dual core CPU. You can't play a lot of games on them.

An i3 (Intel) should be as low as you go on the CPU scale.

@herman mcpootis made the best build you'll likely find at that price.

You could always get an SSD now, and an HDD later. Or just get your friend to save an extra $60ish.

no it won't. its just slightly faster boot times and more responsive feel while a better graphics card will get much better picture quality in games and/or much better smoothness.

stop your bullshit overexaggeration, i've(and most of us) have used hdds for our pc before, and chrome does not take goddamn 30 seconds to launch.

have you seen the storage space needed for new games? one game now can easily take up to 30-60gb of storage. try storing that onto a 120gb hdd, or even a 240gb for that matter. you'll run out FAST.

lets put it this way. an ssd upgrade costs only $40-45 for a 120gb ssd, and $60-70 for a 240gb ssd. a new gtx 1050ti would cost $145. you want him to smoke $145 for his next upgrade because of slightly faster boot times?

I would keep this basic build, but I would drop the SSD and even just go with 4Gigs of RAM in order to get an i3-6100 instead of the G4400. (and/or go with a cheaper 2Gig RX 460).

Many games - GTA 5 for example - need more CPU power than a G4400 can provide.

But, it does depend upon what games will be played, and there is the aspect that the G4400 could be upgraded later.

A sieve may not hold water, but it will hold another sieve.

i5-6600, 16Gigs, ITX Corsair 250D, R9 390, 120Gig M.2 boot, 500Gig SATA SSD, no HDD

But, it does depend upon what games will be played, and there is the aspect that the G4400 could be upgraded later.

he does say he wanted to play GTA 5. maybe i would take the i3

no it won't. its just slightly faster boot times and more responsive feel while a better graphics card will get much better picture quality in games and/or much better smoothness.

stop your bullshit overexaggeration, i've(and most of us) have used hdds for our pc before, and chrome does not take goddamn 30 seconds to launch.

have you seen the storage space needed for new games? one game now can easily take up to 30-60gb of storage. try storing that onto a 120gb hdd, or even a 240gb for that matter. you'll run out FAST.

lets put it this way. an ssd upgrade costs only $40-45 for a 120gb ssd, and $60-70 for a 240gb ssd. a new gtx 1050ti would cost $145. you want him to smoke $145 for his next upgrade because of slightly faster boot times?

geees. you don't got to get all harsh.

well a new 1050 TI would cost that much minus the cost he gets back when he resells his current card. And yes it doesn't take 30 seconds to open chrome. Maybe for someone who really cares about their computer and make sure everything is optimized just right, but for a normal person, it goes down real fast. My brothers system is trash. It only takes about 2 minutes to boot, but then another another 5 minutes until everything starts to level out.

In my opinion, I would rather have the SSD. Very clearly you would rather have a newer GPU. I don't care what the OP Decides. Up to him, but he is right, you can't really afford a SSD on this budget. You need a better CPU more than anything if you want to play games like GTA or Forza

i am pretty sure you meant to upgrade to a GPU that is more premium in the next 2-3 years. and for the chrome issue... well i have an old laptop with a hdd and it takes 5 mins to boot and 30+ sec to fire up chrome heck even internet explorer ( YES EVEN FRIKIN INTERNET EXPLORER )

older harddisks may have been fragmented which will make it run slower than normal. if its a 5400rpm hdd than it'll also be slower than a 7200rpm hdd. you shouldn't see the pc this slow with a current 7200rpm hdd.
