27"+ Ultrawide Gaming monitor under 1000USD

Jonathan W

So i'm looking for a gaming monitor to replace my ASUS MX279H. I love having a 27" display but I can't help but want for more. I really want to get in to Ultrawide but can't find much of anything that's ultrawide, at a good resolution that my GTX 980 and i5 4960K at 4.1GHz will drive 60FPS Ultra, is under 1000USD, and definitely good for gaming. I would also prefer that the monitor is curved as I truly believe in the benefits of a curved monitor at that screen size, but they're all so damn expensive at 1000USD or higher in most cases.

So I implore you, please help me find the next monitor of my dreams :P

Welcome to the UltrawideMR!

2560x1080, the main resolution of lower-mid end Ultrawides, is fine for most uses, and takes a similar performance hit to 1440p.

3440x1440, the higher-end Ultrawide resolution, is often more expensive, and takes slightly more power.

Not curved, but good enough. 29" diagonal, 1080p. Aluminium stand.: https://www.amazon.com/LG-29UM68-P-29-Inch-21-UltraWide/dp/B01B9IDLAW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1477996862&sr=8-1&keywords=lg+29"+ultrawide

Same as above but frameless and still by Asus: https://www.amazon.com/ASUS-MX299Q-29-2560x1080-Frameless/dp/B00DRPYQ9G/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&qid=1477997292&sr=8-11&keywords=ultrawide+29

expensive 34" diagonal Samsung 21:9. 1440p, curved: https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-S34E790C-34-Inch-Professional-Monitor/dp/B00Q7VCSGU/ref=sr_du_15_map?ie=UTF8&qid=1477997292&sr=8-15

Less expensive Dell monitor. 34", 1440p, Curved: https://www.amazon.com/Dell-UltraSharp-PXF79-34-Inch-LED-Lit/dp/B00PXYRMPE/ref=sr_1_7?ie=UTF8&qid=1477997288&sr=8-7&keywords=ultrawide

Good luck :)

your limit is your gfx card ....1440@mid settings or 1080@ultra

Does any/every one else concur with this? A GTX 980 with a core clock peak of around 1200MHz and a Memory peak of about 3500MHz [all at my current very, very minimal OC] would really do so poorly at 1440p

Nope. Your 980 is around the 1060's level of performance, and here's some benchmarks by Paul's Hardware at both ultra-wide resolutions.

Damn man he's getting over 100 frames in GTA5 at 2560x1080..my 980 often drops down to like high 30's-low to mid 40s when driving real fast for some damn reason :/

Well then it's not super helpful to me to understand how *MY* card will do in my system because I don't have that chip lol.

I bought my 980 right when it came out for 750 bucks and it's sad to think i need to upgrade so soon :[

What settings were you running in GTA V? He's running most on Very High, MSAA at x2 and FXAA off.

Run x2 instead of x4 MSAA. GTA V is a large game, and MSAA stresses your GPU really, really badly. Just take it down to x2 and see how far it takes you

idk
