Hey guys

So im going to upgrade my Sony vaio notebooks hdd to ssd. Before hand i opened the laptop to see inside and for some research. I came across a adata msata ssd along with the hardrive (did not know it came with one). This confused me greatly. The msata card has 24 gb and runs very poorly (long time to boot os etc). Now i am puzzled. what should i do? i was going to just replace the hdd with a samsung 850 evo sata but idk what to do now after finding the msata.

Side note, pc came with windows 8.1, could it be possible when i upgraded it for free it downloaded on the hdd? (im pretty sure if preformed the same before the upgrade).

Just take the card out? Will it still work?

also could i just put in a msata ssdwith the storage i need, install an os on it then keep the hardrive i currently have for more storage?

Hi there Lethalmonk :)

The mSATA SSD is there in order to act like a cache drive for the main HDD, improving performance of the most frequently used applications by holding their data on the SSD for faster access. This is pre-set for you and the system "learns" over time which applications are mostly used. This is the same principal as SSHDs (Hybrid drives).

I would contact the manufacturer and see if you can use a regular mSATA SSD on that slot and if you can reconfigure the mSATA drive as a standalone drive or as a cache SSD.

You could check out WD Blue SSD as a potential upgrade for your system.

Let me know if you have any questions!
