PC vs CONSOLES

!READ THIS BEFORE YOU THROW $#!┴ AT OTHERS!

All right, my plan is long-range test, but I don't have enough resources to make it possible, so I'm asking the community, or LTT members themseves, to make this test possible.
I really love consoles, and I protect them every time I hear PCMR bullshit about haow overpriced they are, and how little they performance is. My goal is to prove people, or myself, wrong once and for all. 
 

I'd like someone to buy a PS4 pro, and build the best PC possible for the exact same amount of money. Peripherials for PC is the cheapest mouse and keyboard, or whatever balance you'd like to make between internals and peripherials. I trust that people know this better than I am. Monitor is not necessery, because the PS4P needs a TV or monitor as well, so it's sunken expenses for both. (However now that PlayStation VR is a thing, I'd love to compare it against a PC one at the same price point.)

Now the test shoud begin. Throughout the years, test, which one handles newer and newer titles better (of course excluding exclusives). I'd love to know how a cheap pc handles future games VS how a console will handle them.

I'd really love to see the result, and I'm sure many of you are as interested as I am.

p.s.: I know PC is better but at nearly twice as much, now the question is how it fairs with the closest price possible.

Thank you for reading this, I really hope someone will bring me answers when the "next-gen" consoles come out, 4 or 5 years later.

See consoles used to be good with the NES, Atari, first Xbox, orginal Wii, and even the PS3 and Xbox 360. But now you can get almost every game on console then you can on PC and you are not tied to MS or Sony. You can also do whatever you want. Someone saying a console is better is someone who is inexperienced with PCs and are intimidated by them. No flame ware please but consoles price/perf are sad.

Just keeping this here as a The PS4 Pro is way better than any PC you can buy for $400, everyone who tries to come with these crap builds to hit that price point fails so badly. The PS4 Pro is a really good deal at $400. Last generation the PS3 launched at $750 in today's dollars. You really need about $600 for a pc that blows consoles out of the water. Something like this:

keep in mind you need to pay a subscription fee to play online on consoles. On pc thats free obv.

Just a coupla of things I wanted to point out

1. Monitor's are usually cheaper than a comparable TV but both can be run off a monitor/TV so... :P 

2. The cost of PSN gold can substitute the price of buying windows off G2A/Kinguin

3. Buy a few triple As (used for the console counts), indie titles and maybe some older games and count up the total as game prices are another factor, not just the hardware itself...hold on, the PS4 doesn't have backward compatibility, NVM with the older games then :P 

4. The person still needs a computer if he doesn't already have one so you technically need to add $80 or however much a intel compute stick costs meaning building a i3+RX470 (very comparable if not better than the 8 jaguar cores and the 900MHz "rx480" in the PS4 pro) so...if you include all the factors, you'll probably find neither is much cheaper than the other with both having upsides and downsides.

Consoles will always get the upper hand purely for local multiplayer. Hand my friend a controller and we are both playing.

PC is only better at twice the price? You must be new here.

 

Either way, it sounds like a good test, but the only factor here is the difference in optimization. Developers nowadays are almost always doing console first then porting, and a bad port has nothing to do with the capability of the hardware and everything to do with how lazy the dev is.

 

In the end, as time goes on, regardless of the hardware, you won't see many games that perform exceptionally poorly on a console but you will on PC. That's because the games that are available on console are made specifically to run on that console, so it's dumbed down until it works. That's one of the reasons I hate consoles, because their limitations have become limitations on most of the industry.

For point #1, you can buy a 40" 1080p LED TV for $230 or so instead of paying $130 for a 23" 1080p monitor. So PC is cheaper but there is no comparable monitor that I know of. Point #2 is fair, though not everyone cares about playing games online. Point #3 is definitely one of the best reasons for buying a PC, you buy that $600 PC and if you play a lot of games you'll probably make it up in the long run off Steam sales and GOG sales. So you'd have the best of both worlds then, except for missing the Playstation exclusives (XBox doesn't count since they're putting their exclusives on UWP now). Point #4 I don't agree with. AMD gpus don't play well with Core i3s in DX11 games, and DX11 isn't going anywhere for a while. I wouldn't buy a PC if it wasn't something I could play at 60 fps, since 30 fps looks horrible on PC but the frame pacing is often better on consoles when targeting 30 fps. Point #5 I don't agree with, many games play better on controller than mouse and keyboard.

PC is better and cheaper in "the long run". (even more so if you get your games on grey market places... or just plain pirate them)

 

What can you do on a PC?

Cost : A good PC that will last you more than 3 years can cost you a bit of money, more so than a console(double or even triple), but in 5 years, the only thing you would even need to upgrade on that PC, is the graphic card, to play the latest games, and you can always get a used "last gen" GPU for MUCH cheaper than the new and shiny ones. While on consoles you will need to buy a whole new console in that time frame, and say good bye to your old games because there probably won't be any backward compatibility. 

-Play games: Ok, consoles can do that too, but PC can play them at the settings that you want, you're not stuck at low settings 900p 30fps for example, in 5 years if you want to keep using your high end PC, you can. You will just have to lower the graphics or buy a new GPU. You can't do this on console, you have to buy a new one to play those latest games.

-PC games are often cheaper: Consoles games go on sales too... Just not as heavily discounted as PC games or as often discounted. Not to mention that it's not rare for a PC game to be cheaper than the console version, at release. (not really the case for the so called "triple A" games)

-Browsing the web : While you can do this on console, it's simply quicker and easier on PC using the mouse/keyboard.

-Playing movies : Consoles probably win in this department, as not many of us even have a BluRay drive in their PC, not to mention it add extra cost...

-Listening to music : Not sure about consoles, on PC we have spotify, google music, and many other services.

-Library of games : PC wins hands down considering you can still play games from 20 years ago, not to mention emulating console games, at better graphical settings, up to the Wii so far.

-Network play : Playing online on PC is FREE. Consoles require between $50(PS) and $60(XB) per year for online play.

-Cost of peripherals : PC need keyboard and mouse, you can get them under $10 for a combo set. Chances are, you already have them to begin with so that's a no added cost. Consoles generally come with at least 1 controller, though are more likely to break than a stationary keyboard and mouse.

Applications : You're limited to whatever Sony/Microsoft wants you to use, like a netflix app, hulu, maybe amazon? PCs have no limit on this.

Sharing your experience : I'd say it's a mix bag, it depends on what softwares you use on PC. You can make this extremely quick and easy with the right tools. While on consoles it's all available at the push of a button.

Security : Considering the Sony hack from before, not sure you'd be safe even giving them your credit card number. Then there's viruses on PC... If we just go with the "raw security" in terms of protecting your data, consoles win. Then again it's not like there's much to steal on your playstation as the credit card number is on the sony servers, not your own console.

Setup : Well there's no question here, Consoles wins. Plug, do the initial setup in a few minutes, done. PCs you will need to spend a while configuring everything the way you want them, installing an anti virus, your favorite browser, Steam, a game or two....

Installing games : PC is MUCH faster, be it from the faster network speed that seems crippled on consoles for some reason to the actual installation of said games that can take HOURS on consoles, Jim Sterling had a field day with this one.

 

And I'm not even mentioning how much more you can do with a PC. Be it using it for your job, emails, video/photo editing, 3D modeling and many many more things you simply cannot do on a console.

 

Overall, both consoles and PCs have their pros and cons and I may have missed a few things/exaggerated others above, but consoles are no longer the thing you just put a disc in and play right away, there's day one patches, sometimes the entire game isn't even on the disc, there's constant updates for the console, the game or even the god damn controller. New consoles like the PS4 and Xbox one are essentially dumbed down PCs with fewer functionality to try and counter piracy.

All right guys, as I read through this, i can feel the acidic hatred going through the replys. Ignorant people with expensive PC, whom are feeling superior. 

For example, where the hell did you get 900p and min preset? Lets get the BF1, thst just came out. It has roughly medium settings with low shaders and stable 50 fps avg, which is nice for a , 400 dollar machine. 

Monitor or TV obviously won't count, as I already mentioned, because you can use a monitor with a console, TV with a pc and vise versa. 

 

For the guy who insist that everyone has a pc to upgrade: what if someone has a laptop, or a mac? Where is your god now? 

 

Yes PCs are capable of doing a lot more stuff, which i acknowledge, so "pc has office and can browse web" is no longer a valid argument. 

 

Backwards compatibility: Sony messed up PS3, So I'm not suprised. However there are a lot of remakes of old games, that which you can play. Yes, not all, this is a valid argument, valid downside. But as you can see, this isn't "who plays old games better" topic. 

 

Yes, I might sound like a fanboy, but I just simply get triggered when they say consoles suck. PS3 sucked, but only after 4-5 years. But this generation of consoles are quite good, and now they get even better. 

 

P.s.: some said you only need to upgrade CPU and GPU every 3 years. I'd like to see that guy having a pentium socket with a 1060 :D . Seriously tho, after the second try, you'll bottleneck your pc.
