Why do people insist on comparing cards like this

Brendan

Why say '7950 is a 7970 when over clocked to xxxx mhz.'

Don't people realise if you buy a high end card like 7950 or 7970, you'll probably end up over clocking it anyway? Sure 7950 is around a 7970 once over clocked but since you're going to over clock in the first place, an over clocked 7970 would be superior.

I just don't understand why people compare an over clocked card to a not over clocked card and say they are equal.

They are equal in the sence of saving money and only money, Hey if your mister bling bling then by all means blow every cent you have and go balls to the wall, but let me tell you I make a butt load of money and I still find ways to get around stuff, I would rather spend $2500 dollars on a custom loop and $400 dollars on a sweet case then buy a 7970 and waste the extra $200 bucks that I could be saving for other cool stuff, the 7950 can max out all games on the market anyways so if you want be my guest and waste that money lol :)

Of course but I'm not specifically talking about 7970. Same goes for lower end cards, comparing an over clock to a non over clock. Price doesn't count because you're still purchasing more performance when buying a higher end card.

It's all about saving money to some of us. If you can get the performance of item A with the price of item B, with a little bit of modification. Then why not save that money and put it towards something else while still having the power you wanted in the first place?

Mr. Admin... We seriously need that RANT@#$@# section...

True, I guess it all comes down to whether you feel that the extra money is worth it or not.

But saving money isn't the same when you're buying less performance for less money.

.It's to give a frame of reference nothing more.
Spot on. OP is right the comparison makes little sense otherwise. TBH it makes little sense to even make it in terms of the money you might save.

Well the thing is with cards like the original 660 Ti PE from MSI it could match an overclocked 670 and pretty much match a reference 680 so that's why people make comparisons like that.

For those of us who have a limited budget it makes sense to compare over clocks vs non overclocks. It just tells us what we could do with a graphics card within our budget.

Life is pain. Anyone who says any different is either selling something or the government.

I'm actually on OP's side. Often times I see people saying an inferior card is equal to a superior card because of overclocks, but OP is completely right in saying that it's unfair. Yes, it tells you what you can do with your card within your budget, but it also ignores what you can do with a higher budget. It's nice to think that you're getting a 670's performance when you have a 660ti, but I feel that it's almost a mindset of self compensation. Simply because an overclocked lower card matching a reference higher card provides extremely good value does not mean you can dismiss a higher end card as a "waste." This is coming from somebody who has a middle-of-the-road system with an overclocked 7870.

I also think that some of you feel slightly offended that OP could make such a terrible assertion. He's clearly not being aggressive, and he never talked about being "Mister Bling Bling."

LOL I was not saying or using the OP as Mister Bling Bling, I was mirrorly stating anyone who wants to be Mister Bling Bling but thanks for looking out :)
